Sony to remake Chinese hit movie, "Hi, Mom"
20 Oct - Mainland movie, "Hi, Mom" is set to get a Hollywood treatment, as Sony Pictures has now acquired the English-language remake rights to it.
The original 2021 movie, which was written by, directed by and starred Jia Ling, is currently in the early stages of development, with Escape Artists' Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch and Becky Sanderman producing along with She Wenxin.
Speaking about the adaptation, Jia said, "I am looking forward to this cooperation and I am so glad that my story with my mum can be shared with more people. I believe that while everyone's stories with their mums are unique, the love in these stories is universal and something we can all resonate with."
The original Chinese title, "Hello, Li Huanying" is a tribute to Jia's mother of the same name. It started from a comedy sketch that she wrote in 2016 before it was developed into a movie and began production in 2019.
In the film, Jia played a young woman who, in her grief following her mother's fatal injuries from an accident, travels back to the early 1980s where she becomes best friends with the younger version of her mother. She then feels that she has not been a good enough daughter and so does her best to set up her mother with another man in the hopes of giving her mother a better husband, a better life, and a better daughter than her.
