Singapore’s 1st-ever Hokkien Lam Ann Cultural Festival has traditional food stalls, lion dances & mooncake workshops
If you’re looking for something to do this week, you’re in luck! The Singapore Lam Ann Association presents the country’s first-ever Hokkien Lam Ann Cultural Festival, which will take place from 29 Sep to 8 Oct 2023.
The Hokkien Lam Ann Cultural Festival is held at 30 Mohamed Sultan Road, right beside the historical Hong San See Temple, a national monument that received the Award of Excellence for the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation.
Look forward to participating in a range of activities, including dining from almost 20 food stalls, participating in cultural workshops, watching exciting performances and even taking part in lucky draws.
The wide number of F&B stalls at the Lam Ann Cultural Festival offer more than 40 Hokkien signatures, including Hokkien dumplings, chicken feet, large intestine mee sua, Chinese mustard green rice and ngoh hiang rolls. Most dishes cost between S$3 to S$5, and make for the perfect mid-day bite.
You can also get dishes from well-known brands in Singapore. Feng Ji Chicken Rice is one of the F&B vendors where you can obtain a small plate of fresh chicken rice for S$4. Other vendors include Lee Bin Hong, with Angelica Root Roast Duck, Honey Pork Belly Char Siew and Crispy Pork Belly sets from S$5.
Of course, you can also grab a few treats at the Lam Ann Cultural Festival to bring home. Try out Joo Chiat Kim Choo‘s Hokkien rice dumplings, which cost S$3 to S$7 each, or indulge in some handmade Ang Ku Kueh (S$2 for 2 pieces), available in the flavours of Peanut, Sweet Bean, Salted Bean, Coconut and Green Tea.
Step into the outdoor exhibition hall to participate in a range of fun activities, including finger painting, paper cutting artistry and tea appreciation. You can even learn how to make cute little piglet mooncakes!
Broaden your horizons with Lam Ann Cultural Festival’s seminars held within the Lee Kong Chian Hall — seminars include an introduction to and demonstration of puppet theatre, as well as one about mental wellbeing.
Finally, enjoy thrilling performances throughout the festival. On the opening day, I got to watch an exciting performance by the Genting World Lion Dance Championship‘s winners. On other days, watch out for more performances and talent shows, such as a karaoke singing competition and the Confident Goddess Plus Sized Talent Show!
