1. Ding Bakery

To no one’s great surprise, Ding Bakery once again tops our CNY snacks recommendations.  Part of the reason that they so easily achieved the feat this year is their massive new range of 34 products!

First in the range that you simply must try next year is the Crispy Tiger Prawn Sticks (Ma La) (S$16.90). These seriously spicy lengths of deliciousness are not for the faint of heart. Another of the debutantes to look forward to are the Ondeh Ondeh Balls (S$20.90), which are made of real gula melaka and coconut shreds stuffed delightfully inside a pandan-flavoured crust.

However, our tongues are telling us that the jewel in the Ding Bakery crown for 2024 will be their all-new Premium Roasted Coffee Butter Cookies (S$17.90). Make sure to reserve a pair of these early because they are bound to run out very quickly once word gets out.

If you are more of a traditionalist, their trio of long-time favourites – Premium Roasted Coffee Butter Cookies (S$17.90), Melt-In-Your-Mouth Pineapple Ball (French Butter) (S$20.90) and Nyonya Pineapple Tarts (S$18.90) – are the obvious choices.

Melt-In-Your-Mouth Kueh Bangkit (S$18.90), Gold Standard Premium Butter Cookies (Melt-In-Your-Mouth) (S$18.90) and Premium Golden Egg Roll Love Letters (S$20.90) add some lovely diversity of tastes and textures.

Ding Bakery’s CNY snacks range extends to the savoury side, too. Their Premium Hae Bee Hiam (Sambal Prawn Crackers) (S$17.90) and Crispy Salted Egg Crab Stick (S$18.90) will add a nice balance to your snacks spread.

It’s not easy creating snack after snack that tantalises the tastebuds as Ding Bakery does. It’s an open secret that they have become one of Singapore’s favourite CNY snacks suppliers because of their handmade, homemade fresh bakes, all made from fresh ingredients every day.

Be sure to check out their entry on our pineapple tarts list, too.

If you have been keeping up with our recommendations, you will certainly recognise the name, as will thousands of other Singaporeans.

Part of the magic of Pineapple Tarts Singapore is their commitment to impeccable quality. We were lucky that we were first introduced to them years ago and have become big fans since. It all began with a free sample at their address, a feature that they maintain to this day.

Of course, the sheer magnificence of taste and flavour that you get with their 100% homemade and handmade CNY goodies, especially pineapple tarts is something else.

56 years is a lot of time to perfect your trade and that’s exactly what fourth-generation CNY goodies specialist, Wang Lai Bakery has done. Famous today around Singapore and even across our borders, they started as a humble home operation baking for friends and family.

It amazes us that even in this day and age, and despite the massive number of orders that they fulfil, Wang Lai Bakery still creates each CNY snack in their repertoire without the use of machines. Every single piece is crafted from scratch using premium quality ingredients, imbuing them with the same authentic textures and flavours our counterparts would have experienced and enjoyed many, many years ago.

Some may prefer the less sweet, guilt-free Pineapple Pillows (S$29.80). This wonderful creation achieves the perfect sweet-salty balance by cocooning a genuine Thai pineapple filling inside a classic butter and cheese pastry. If you’re a fan of this combined dance of flavours, try the Pineapple Bak Kwa (S$29.80) with its stuffing of Thai pineapple paste and traditional bak kwa, too.

Other flavours to look forward to are the Peanut Almond (S$29.80)— an ultimate crumbly melt-in-your-mouth delight featuring roasted, nutty undertones and buttery layers of pastry, and the fragrantly spicy shrimp-and-sambal Hae Bee Hiam (S$29.80).

With their wonderful packaging, Baker’s Brew CNY snacks make for the perfect gift and you can save by getting their bundles.

We all know that we indulge a little too much during Chinese New Year, but that’s where choosing Cedele may be the best option. They use the finest natural ingredients in their entire range of products. The result is less guilt while you still enjoy treats that taste amazing.

Cedele Artisanal Handmade Cookies (S$32) are an addictive range of bite-sized cookies baked with the finest European butter and unrefined sugar. Completely preservative-free, they are a universally popular treat for family and friends to usher in this bountiful Lunar New Year!

Cedele Pineapple Pocket Pie (S$35) is the perennial best-seller which needs no introduction. Lovingly hand-rolled, these little pies consist of pastry that melts in your mouth to reveal an irresistible lightly sweetened pineapple jam. If you have never tried them before, there is no time like the present to discover why they are so popular.

Sweetening the spread even more this year is Cedele’s all-new Cashew Coconut Gula Melaka (S$32). As you can tell from the name, it is a sweet medley of 3 ingredients that are delicious enough on their own – desiccated coconut, gula melaka and cashew nuts.

The crunch in this light and crispy snack comes from the toasted nuts, complemented fabulously by the unique chewy texture of the coconut. Heavenly gula melaka holds it all together with the sticky sweetness you can’t resist.

We’re certainly intrigued by the Nasi Lemak Cookie (S$32)! Enhanced with coconut milk and fragrant curry leaves, it features a subtly spiced aroma, complemented by the crunch of ikan bilis and toasted peanuts.

One of those is their 好意头芋头糕 Yam Cake (7” round) (S$28.80). It is superbly flavoursome as the yam is cut and shredded by hand, steamed and then combined with chicken sausage, scallops and shiitake mushroom.

7. Goodwood Park Hotel

Goodwood Park Hotel has gone all out to create the most eye-catching treats for CNY 2024.

cny - Mao Shan Wang’ Durian Roll Cake

Topping their list is the Auspicious Firecracker (‘Mao Shan Wang’ Durian Roll Cake, 800g) (S$138). No guessing what this cake is supposed to represent but as the first slice was cut, I was mesmerised by the vibrant red swirl of the vermillion chiffon. Adorned with a chocolate dragon emblem, peach blossoms, oranges and treasure, this really is a conversation piece.

cny - Lucky Fortune Bamboo Orange Pound Cake

No less of a spectacle is the Lucky Fortune Bamboo (Orange Pound Cake, 1.5 kg) (S$148). A ‘pot’ of orange pound cake infused with orange zest accompanied by buttercream is the base for a forest of white chocolate bamboo. The realism of this creation is a thing of wonder.

cny - Pandan Pineapple ‘Huat’ Tarts

The Pandan Pineapple ‘Huat’ Tarts, 8 pieces (S$68.80) amaze you with their taste, filled as the crumbly tart crusts are with glistening homemade pineapple chutney and aromatic pandan-flavoured almond cream. A lattice design and an auspicious white chocolate wealth pot or (‘fā’) topper complete the magic.

Our other recommendation is the Spicy Salted Egg Yolk Lotus Root Chips with Chicken Floss (S$36.80). These thin, crispy lotus root chips are generously sprinkled with savoury salted egg yolk and flavourful chicken floss.

Xin Cuisine Chinese Restaurant at Holiday Inn Singapore Atrium makes our list again with its delicious renditions of old favourites. It doesn’t spread itself too thin, either, focusing on just 3 celebratory snacks for Chinese New Year 2024.

cny - Xin Cuisine's Coconut Nian Gao

The first is the auspicious nian gao in the form of Xin’s Nian Gao with Coconut Sauce (S$53). Next is the Xin’s Signature Yam and Pumpkin Cake (S$53). I love the sweetness there but for those who prefer a bit of balance between sweet and savoury, there is always the Signature Radish Cake with Preserved Meat (S$59).

All 3 come in a significant portion of 1.2 kg, suitable for between 5 to 8 persons. They are prepared or delivered chilled so you can steam, pan-fry or deep-fry them to your preference. There is a S$80 delivery charge per location islandwide, but complimentary for orders above $1,288.

Collection can be made at the following dates and times:

  • 3 – 21 Jan 2024 (Wed and Sun only): 12pm – 8pm

  • 22 – 24 Feb 2024:  12pm – 8pm

  • 9 Feb 2024 (CNY Eve):  11am – 2pm

9. Whisking Bakes

Born in 2020, Whisking Bakes is a relative newcomer to the CNY snacks scene. It is Singapore’s first specialty bake shop and here, they do things a little differently –  instead of using pineapple in their tarts, they use yam! This isn’t unheard of – it is a traditional variation from Teochew cuisine where the pastry is stuffed with delicious and smooth yam paste steamed to perfection.

cny - Orh Nee tarts

At Whisking bakes, the CNY Orh Nee Tarts come in 2 bottle sizes: Small (11 pieces) (S$17.50) and Medium (25 pieces) (S$36.50). You can save a bit if you buy a Bundle of 4 Small (S$63) or a Bundle of 2 Medium (S$69).

Whisking Bakes recommends you finish the tarts within 3-5 days if the bottles are kept at room temperature and within 2 weeks if they are stored in a refrigerator. This is because their CNY snacks are baked completely free of preservatives.

10. Ollella

Indonesian heritage, Parisian techniques and American creativity come together in a Singaporean bakery at Ollella. Oh, and what a spread they have for CNY 2024!

cny - mochi balls

There’s no better place to start than at the all-new Bo Lo Pineapple Mochi Balls (S$19.80). Each of the 6 pieces has pineapple jam wrapped in pineapple mochi, then covered in salted egg yolk butter cookie. The cherry on top is the red tin gift box they come in.

Of course, the classic Golden Pineapple Balls (13pcs, ~260g) (S$19.80) also make an appearance. Ollella makes them less sweet so you can indulge more. Another way to indulge responsibly would be the Vegan Almond Cookies (20pcs, ~230g) (S$19.80) made from premium US almonds.

Another classic from Ollella is their signature Jade Ondeh Balls (12pcs, ~230g) (S$19.80). These deliciously moist wonders are made from coconut gula Jawa and encased in a melt-in-mouth pandan butter cookie.

Our other recommendations are the Huat Hebi Hiam Balls (S$19.80), the new Prosperous Golden Shrimp Lapis (hei bi hiam with salted egg yolk) (from S$42) and the Signature Spiced Lapis (from S$28.50).
