Simon Yam's attacker suffers from mental illness

22 Jul – Police recently revealed that the man who was arrested for attacking Simon Yam with a knife was known to suffer from a mental illness.

As reported on China.Org, the said man, a 53-year-old surnamed Chen, was revealed to have confessed to his crime and sent to a local hospital, which subsequently evaluated his mental status and found him suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

The authority has yet to conclude its investigation.

Meanwhile, EasyHome, the company that invited Simon to the launch of its new branch store, has also released a statement to apologise to the actor and the public for the lack of security at its recent event.

"We will strengthen security in the future for public events, and prevent things like this from happening again," it read.

The actor attended the launch held at the Torch High-tech Industrial Development Zone in Zhongshan, Guangdong province on 20 July, and was on stage being interviewed when the suspect rushed up and attacked him with a fruit knife.

Simon sustained a two-centimetre wide and three-centimetre deep wound to the right side of his abdomen, and injuries to four fingers on his right hand.
