Shock death: Uncle Ah Pui of Ah Pui Satay has passed on
The founder of Ah Pui Satay, Mr Ang Boon Ee, has passed away. He was lovingly referred to by all as “Uncle Ah Pui” and well known for his juicy Hainanese-style satay.
He was 66 years old.
While the cause of his death was not revealed, Mr Ang’s passing was announced to the public through a Facebook post on Ah Pui Satay’s account. It was mentioned that his health had been deteriorating in the months leading up to his death.
In 1976, Mr Ang humbly sold old-school Hainanese charcoal-grilled satay on a trishaw. Up till the early 2010s, he had operated his booming satay business without a licence.
After getting fined by the authorities for the fourth time, Mr Ang decided to take a break before opening the famous Ah Pui Tiong Bahru Satay at Chinatown‘s Smith Street in Jun 2021.
On 2 Nov 2022, it was announced by the restaurant that Uncle Ah Pui was unwell and thus had to take a break to rest. Following the post, Ah Pui Tiong Bahru Satay closed down on 6 Nov 2022.
In Apr this year, Mr Ang reopened Ah Pui Satay at Blk 75 Lorong 5 Toa Payoh Food Centre. Keeping its loyal supporters, the stall saw snaking queues despite the long hiatus. It was reported that they often sold out within 2 to 3 hours of opening the stall. The waiting time could be up to an hour.
According to 8days.sg, Mr Ang had suffered a relapse 2 weeks after the reopening of their stall at Toa Payoh. The details of his illness were not made public. However, his disciple, Ang Thiam Seng had mentioned that they had been looking for a griller to take over from Uncle Ah Pui so he could avoid being near the heat and smoke.
As stated in the Facebook post, Ah Pui Satay will be closed to honour the death of the beloved owner, Mr Ang Boon Ee. Business will resume on Sunday, 28 Jul from 3pm.
Mr Ang was well-loved in the hawker scene and will be dearly missed. We would like to express our deepest condolences to his loved ones.
