Been browsing at Sephora and noticed the Clean + Planet Positive seal on specific products? For years already, Sephora has been increasingly growing its Clean Beauty category. With the introduction of the Clean + Planet Positive seal, brands that prioritise sustainable practices in their creation and marketing of beauty products are highlighted and given the Sephora seal of approval.
What does this mean for the average consumer like you and me? Simply put, consumers who are increasingly requesting for greater transparency from brands are not only educated about what goes on behind-the-scenes, products with an environmentally-friendly philosophy are now more easily available. As a forerunner in the beauty industry, Sephora leads the movement via a two-prong approach: Clean + Planet Positive (better for us) and Clean at Sephora (better for me).
Clean at Sephora
Clean at Sephora focuses on providing the right knowledge to its consumers. One way this is achieved is through its “formulated without” ingredient list – ingredients that are known or suspected to be potentially harmful to human health and the environment. Via science-backed innovations, products in the Clean at Sephora category house a curation of the best in the clean category within the beauty industry.
Clean at Sephora hero products include:
[Sephora Exclusive] Dr Dennis Gross Advanced Retinol + Ferulic Texture Renewal Serum
[Sephora Exclusive] Drunk Elephant Ceramighty AF Eye Balm
Clean + Planet Positive brands
Via the new Clean + Planet Positive seal, Sephora spotlights brands with a solid commitment to being eco-friendly. Earning the Clean + Planet Positive seal involves meeting a particular set of criteria set by Sephora.
Clean + Planet Positive brands include:
Biossance, Caudalie, Farmacy, Herbivore, Glow Recipe, Briogeo, Selfless By Hyram, Sephora Collection
Here are some hero products you can consider adding to your beauty bag:
Here’s what earning a Clean + Planet Positive seal involves:
Clean at Sephora: Products must be formulated without phthalates, formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers, oxybenzone and octinoxate, hydroquinone, triclosan, coal tar, methylisothiazolinone, insoluble plastic, or microbeads.
Brands must meet at least one of the following climate goals: carbon-neutral operations, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, or corporate office and owned or leased operations powered by 100% renewable energy.
Cruelty-free, using only sustainably harvested palm oil and mica, and no microplastics.
Product packaging: No single-use items or unnecessary materials are allowed. All designs are required to be recyclable. Plus points for innovating with refillable components, post-consumer recycled content (PCR), biomaterials, plant-based ink and more.
Brands must donate at least 1 per cent profit to a high-impact, long-term giving programme that is multi-year and ongoing or be a Certified B-corporation.
