From tailored workwear to other-worldly sculptural designs, the graduating class of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Apparel Design program paints an exciting portrait of what the future of fashion can look like.
On May 24, a group of RISD senior fashion students — Yiyi Wang, Fiona Frohnapfel, Sofia Zhuk-Vasilyeva, Hasti Hosseini, Anya Nordstrom, Henry Hawk, Abraham Hsu, Ace Yin, Glory Lee, Kailin Hartley, Gene Suh and Sue Sima — took to the runway at the WaterFire Arts Center in Providence to showcase their work, which RISD Apparel Design department head Gwen Van Den Eijnde described in a statement as "[reflecting] a great variety of references and approaches to clothing the body."
"Every collection synthesizes a number of indispensable elements, from knowledge of the tactile qualities of cloth to proportion and silhouette in relation to the human body, in order to create expressive individual statements about culture and identity," he continued. "Through their intellectual curiosity and experimentation, each student develops their aesthetic vocabulary in order to elaborate their unique creative voice."
