Scientists just heard a super strange thing from space and we are all thinking aliens

A group of experts at the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or SETI, (aka where Jodie Foster worked in Contact) recently recorded some strange signal spikes from space that had a lot of people pretty excited.

Paul Glister, a writer who originally broke the story, said that scientists detected, “a strong signal in the direction of HD164595.”

Translation: Something unusual just went down in deep space.

Of course people immediately assumed (hoped?) that SETI was confirming contact with an other-worldly species.

But the scientists involved are still unconvinced. Since so many people were getting really excited and preparing to meet our extra-terrestrial neighbors, Vox wrote a SETI-approved thorough article (that’s not quite as dense as the actual scientific SETI posts themselves). They hash out all the details of what exactly went down and why (some) people are so excited about it.

Basically, SETI satellites detected a spike in radio waves near a sunlike star only 94 light years away.

The signal (which was detected in May in Russia but only recently reported to the international space community), is exciting because of the possibilities of what it ~might~ prove to be in the future. But as much as we would love to find out that it’s something trying to communicate with us, it’s simply too early to come to that conclusion.

As of yet, there’s been no way to verify or recreate the signal, which means it could have just been caused by a light flare or some other space anomaly.

Since it has yet to be recreated, rediscovered, or reheard, it’s unfortunately (as of right now) just something cool that happened that reminds us that there might be life out there and there are highly intelligent people who are looking for it daily.
