Scared Of Heights? This Crazy Long Escalator Will Terrify You

From ELLE DECOR

If a childhood fear of escalators has followed you into adulthood (you know who you are!), it's time face your fears.

How? By riding an escalator. Up a canyon cliffside. For 18 minutes.

Here's how: A 2,257-foot-long escalator just opened in China's Enshi Grand Canyon, and transports visitors from the Qixing Village resort in the Hubei province to a scenic outlook for $3. It's anticipated that more than 600,000 people will take the nearly 20-minute trip each year, reports Curbed.

The escalator was designed with a reinforced concrete frame, sustainable wood and an ancient form of glazed roof tile. It was built alongside climbing plants so it can eventually "harmoniously blend" into its surrounding scenery, according to the Global Construction Review.

"The whole engineering plan focused on ecological protection, which can be seen from the wooden structure and grey tile at the top of the escalator," said Xiong Yan of Central-South Architectural Design Institute, who is in charge of the project, in a statement.

It's barely the first example of extreme architecture China has showcased this year. In August, the nation opened the world's longest and highest glass bridge, and in April, it revealed plans for the world's third tallest skyscraper.
