Sammi Cheng: You don't have to battle depression alone
26 Dec – In the wake of SHINee's Kim Jong-hyun's suicide following his battle with depression, Hong Kong singer Sammi Cheng recently took to social media to encourage the public to be aware of the danger of the mental illness.
As reported on Mingpao, the singer, who suffered from depression back in 2005, shared that she, of all people, understands the crippling nature of the disease and the mental torture one suffers from it.
"That kind of torture, that kind of black hole of helplessness, only the people who suffered it will understand. But I really do hope that people in such a situation can continue to believe that there will be a way out. Only by healing, through support, by sharing your feelings and the power of love, that depression can recede," she said.
Sammi also admitted that she never considered herself a victor when it comes to overcoming her own struggle with the condition.
"On the contrary, I became absolutely wary of it, and would often pay attention to emotional needs. Always listen to your heart and get emotional support by sharing your feelings with others.
"I understand the pain of depression. You are not alone on this path. A lot of people are willing to accompany you with empathy and love," she added.
In past interviews, Sammi, who battled the condition back in 2005, shared that she lost all interest to work and felt a strong sense of helplessness at the time. However, she overcame the disease with much help, and by trying to be more optimistic about life.
