Sally Willcox Joins Tobey Maguire’s Material Production Shingle

EXCLUSIVE: Longtime CAA literary agent Sally Willcox has joined Tobey Maguire’s production shingle Material. She will work alongside Material’s Matthew Plouffe, overseeing acquisition, development and production in TV and film, and she will report to Maguire.

After Maguire and Plouffe secured funding with investor Richard Weinberg in 2013, they have been loading up film and TV projects and have become a very busy production concern. The next one to go into production is Natchez Burning at Amazon and Sony TV, based on the bestselling books by Greg Iles. Material recently acquired the Eliza Kennedy novel I Take You with Whiplash producer Helen Estabrook, among others. Material most recently produced the Ed Zwick-directed Pawn Sacrifice, in which Maguire played eccentric chess wiz Bobby Fischer; the Craig Zobel-directed Z for Zachariah with Margot Robbie, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Chris Pine; and the YA adaptation The 5th Wave for Sony.

Willcox most recently wrapped production on The Circle, the Dave Eggers novel adaptation written and directed by James Ponsoldt and starring Emma Watson, Tom Hanks and John Boyega. She is exec producer on the film, with Ponsoldt, Likely Story and Playtone producing and Europacorp distributing the film that was financed by Image Nation Abu Dhabi with Parkes MacDonald Productions.

Willcox spent years as a well-regarded agent at CAA, specializing in book and article rights deals and repping authors, scribes and directors that included Eggers, Michael Cunningham, Laura Hillenbrand, Steven Knight, William Nicholson and Wells Tower. She also serves on the board of the Writers Guild Foundation.

“With a full slate of film and TV projects ramping up, I am thrilled to be adding Sally’s impeccable taste and experience to the team,” Maguire said. Added Plouffe: “She’s an all-star with the ambition and relationships we need to capitalize on our development fund and drive the company into its next phase.”

Willcox called Maguire and Plouffe “first-rate executives who have built a truly impressive company. I am thrilled to be joining them at a pivotal moment, and can’t wait to get to work.”
