During the latest episode of AMC’s show Geeking Out, the screenwriters of Deadpool shared some really interesting information about Ryan Reynolds. Reynolds, who had been the driving force behind the creative vision of Deadpool (which ended up paying off big time), ran into a lot of budget constraints from the film’s producers, 20th Century Fox. But rather than allow the constraints to hinder the creative vision that he and director Tim Miller had, he would simply make it happen on his own.

So when the studio wouldn’t pay to make sure the two Deadpool screenwriters, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, would be on set, Reynolds paid out of his own pocket.

According to Cinema Blend, the writers had worked on the project with Reynolds for a long time before production ever began, so Reynolds recognized that they were an integral part of the project and wanted them as involved as possible.

They said, “Interestingly, Ryan wanted us there, we were on the project for six years. It was really a core creative team of us, Ryan, and the director Tim Miller. Fox interestingly wouldn’t pay for us to be on set. Ryan Reynolds paid out of his own money, out of his own pocket.”

Reynolds clearly knew what he wanted and what it would take to get it (which is very Wade Wilson-y of him).

Reese and Wernick are writing the Deadpool sequel which is set to come out in 2018. Tim Miller is also set to direct again and (of course) Reynolds will star. And thanks to the massive success of the first film, they’ll likely be getting a lot more support in their budget from the studio itself.
