Barbie star Ryan Gosling was "self-conscious" about singing in the record-breaking movie.

Gosling stars as Ken and turns in one of his best performances yet. In the film, there are a number of choreographed routines while Gosling has to sing two songs – an original song called "I'm Just Ken" and a cover of "Push" by Matchbox Twenty.

In a roundtable with EW, director Greta Gerwig and Gosling opened up about the musical numbers, with Gerwig noting that Gosling was admittedly "self-conscious" about having to sing "Push."

Gosling recorded the track at Abbey Road Studios in London and admitted he got through it by channeling his inner child star, who was part of The All New Mickey Mouse Club in the 1990s.

"At a certain point, I thought I had left that kid behind, and I realised that I needed his help to make this movie. So I had to go back and make peace with him and ask for his help. It was good for me," Gosling said.

On why the song "Push" was chosen, Gerwig said: "I was like, well, if Barbies loved Indigo Girls' "Closer to Fine," – which is one of my favourite songs of all time, the Kens might really attach to Matchbox Twenty.

"It was playing all the time on Quad 106.5 when I was in seventh grade, and if it wasn't playing there, it was playing at 107.9," she added. "I really loved that song. I listened to it all the time and I was like, 'I feel it. Something's in this.'"

Barbie was released in cinemas on July 21.
