Actor Robbie Coltrane, best known for playing friendly giant Rubeus Hagrid in the movie franchise of Harry Potter, has sadly died at the age of 72. His agent confirmed the news to entertainment publication Deadline earlier today, but a cause of death has not been shared publicly at this time.

As well as lighting up the big screen, Coltrane was also well known for his comedy chops and his role as a criminal psychologist Dr. Edward 'Fitz' Fitzgerald in the series Cracker. He also took a starring turn in two James Bond films, GoldenEye and The World Is Not Enough, as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky (best remembered for executing a trick shot using a cane gun).

He leaves behind two children, a son named Spencer and a daughter named Alice.

Tributes from well known faces, such as QI host Stephen Fry have already begun pouring in for the late actor. Fry said in a tweet shortly after the news of Coltrane's death was announced, "I first met Robbie Coltrane almost exactly 40 years ago. I was awe/terror/love struck all at the same time. Such depth, power & talent: funny enough to cause helpless hiccups & honking as we made our first TV show, 'Alfresco'. Farewell, old fellow. You’ll be so dreadfully missed."

Our thoughts are with all of Robbie's loved ones at this very sad time.
