REVIEW: The Outpost Hotel leaves you feeling refreshed – but some improvements needed

Singapore's trendy getaway for adults? I'm sold.

Singapore's trendy getaway for adults? I'm sold. Recently, I was invited to a media stay at the recently relaunched The Outpost Hotel, located on the vibrant Sentosa island. The hotel has created a new programme, a Coast-to-Coast experience for guests to feel refreshed with a renewed sense of purpose after their stay. The package includes options such as a romantic tandem bike and picnic session on Sentosa’s Coastal Trail, a cable car dining experience, and an exhilarating ride on a rigid-hulled inflatable boat (RHIB) on the Singapore Straits.

Besides a 3D2N stay in a Deluxe room, the package also includes all the perks offered in Outpost Xperience.

So let's deep-dive into some of the experiences curated by the hotel to see if they're worthwhile.

Reasons to stay in this hotel

Upon checking in at the lobby, we were served a thirst-quenching tea-blend drink served in a pineapple-shaped glass. Loved it! Then we were ushered to a nearby shelf where we could personalise our minibar by choosing the snacks and beverages of our choice.

The Deluxe room we stayed in was tastefully decorated with modern light fixtures and classy black-and-white photographs. The warm lighting and ambience cast a soothing feeling over me as I melt into the soft bed and pillows. The large floor-to-ceiling windows face Sentosa, and we could see the calm sea, greenery and adults bouncing about on the HydroDash.

The best fixture I reckon, is the water filtration system that replaces the water bottle service, which is a major plus in my books. One step to respecting Mother Earth and her environment with less plastic!

The bathroom features modern black and white tiles and is installed with Hansgrohe shower mixer table. To top it off, there is a bidet and seat heating function with the toilet. Another plus point!

I quite like the bathroom toiletries by Australian brand Appelles Apothecary & Lab as they use a blend of aromatherapy oils and don't smell old, like some other mature beauty brands.

There is an adults-only sky pool on the hotel's rooftop, which is part of the latest party destination, 1-Altitude Coast. By nighttime, 1-Altitude Coast serves club music and themed parties for the clubbers.

Another outdoor pool area with three swimming pools should be on your radar. However, there's a catch: expect kids there as the hotel shares this facility with guests from their neighbour, Village Hotel Sentosa. One part of the area has been designed to feel like a mini water park, especially with the lazy river, where adults can partake too. Besides dedicated kids' pools, a large swimming infinity outdoor pool overlooks the Sentosa area too. But the lounging area tends to be popular, so head down immediately after breakfast to chope your seats.

Experiences for guests at the hotel

The complimentary Outpost Xperience programme has been curated by lifestyle experts and brand partners for guests at the hotel to experience. Guests can choose from the below:

  • Compendium Gin Cocktail-making Workshop

  • Partner Yoga

  • SupaFresh Street Dance

  • Sachi Soy Wine Cocktail-making Workshop

We chose the soy-wine cocktail-making workshop and got to learn from the founder of the Sachi brand, Jonathan, how the company utilises the by-product soy whey to create their soy wine. During the workshop, we found it to be heavy on product presentation, and towards the end, we 'personalised' our cocktail by choosing ingredients like orange peel, mint leaves, ginger and/or lemongrass to add to the drink. While this isn't your typical mixology workshop, we reckon that a more hands-on approach would keep the guests enticed.

What could be done better

There are plenty of food options within the hotel's grounds, including Sol & Ora, a Mediterranean-inspired restaurant; 1-Altitude Coast, which serves contemporary Asian dishes; and Native Kitchen, a restaurant dedicated to Singapore's local delicacies.

We spent both our breakfast and dinner time at Sol & Ora, and for both seatings, service was impacted by a backlog of orders. Even on a busy day, a restaurant should know how to manage orders without making guests wait exceptionally long. The four-course meal was not served in the right order for dinner, with my Petite Meze appetiser served after my main dish had arrived. My partner of Mediterranean descent also commented that the eggplant dish did not meet his standard as it was not cooked and braised properly.

Restaurant service is a skill that can be built over time, and we hope to see some improvements.
