28 Jan – Animated movies have been conquering the box office and quite a number of these are by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment, hence why both are hoping to keep the momentum going by releasing sequels to three of their successful titles starting from 2019.
Their most recent release, "Sing", has earned itself a sequel, "Sing 2", which will drop on Christmas Day 2020.
Also releasing in 2020 is "Minions 2", the follow-up to 2015's "Minions". Previously dated 10 July, it has now been moved up to 3 July 2020.
Last year's "The Secret Life of Pets" will still get its sequel but "The Secret Life of Pets 2" original 13 July 2018 release date has been pushed a year to 3 July 2019.
"Sing", released in December last year, has amassed USD430 million worldwide against its USD75 million budget, based on Box Office Mojo stats.
Meanwhile "The Secret Life of Pets", released in July, has a total of USD875 million at the global box office, making it the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2016.
"Minions", the spin-off of Illumination and Universal's most successful animated movie franchise "Despicable Me" which was made due to the popularity of the yellow pill-shaped gibberish-spouting sidekicks of Gru, did not disappoint as it made USD1.15 billion worldwide, placing fifth on the list of 2015's highest-grossing movies.
This year, "Despicable Me 3", the third instalment of the "Despicable Me" franchise, is slated for release in June.
