REX Steakhouse + Bar is a new concept by the folks behind Red Eye Smokehouse. The neighbourhood steakhouse can be found tucked away in the buzzy neighbourhood of Jalan Besar, and is within walkable distance from Bendemeer MRT Station.

Start your meal with one of REX Steakhouse + Bar’s delicious starters, like the Beef Brisket Samosas (S$16++), consisting of crispy pastries filled with beef brisket and served with a side of cilantro yogurt, and the Charred Salad (S$17++), which combines marinated tomatoes, lettuce, asparagus and fine beans with miso burnt butter and parmigiana.

I loved the Whipped Burrata (S$20++), which was soft and creamy with a light sweetness. It also comes with smoked tomato confit, pistachio pesto and warm focaccia for an extra pop of flavour.

The star of the night was undoubtedly REX Steakhouse + Bar’s Jack’s Creek Wagyu MS 4+ Zabuton (S$60++), made with a cut of beef from the chuck or shoulder area of the cow. I had never tried zabuton before and wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was blown away by how tender the meat was, and I loved the strong, robust and complex beefy flavours that emerged with each bite.

The King River Wagyu M5+ Picanha (S$42++) is a good option for those who prefer less intense beefy flavours. Though it was a little chewy for my liking, its flavours still shone through.

Pair your steaks with your choice of sides, including Charred Broccolini (S$12++), Sauteed Mushrooms (S$12++) and Buttery Mashed Potatoes (S$10++) for an even more filling meal.

If steak isn’t your thing, not to worry, for REX Steakhouse + Bar offers other delicious mains that will be sure to impress. The Smash Cheeseburger (S$17++) contains a patty made from steak trimmings and offcuts, with American cheddar, house-made burger sauce and tomatoes to enhance it even more.

We were super impressed by the Brick Chicken (S$23++), which was exceptionally juicy and tender with a crispy golden brown skin and flavourful meat. Though it may seem strange to get chicken at a steakhouse, this was truly one of the best chicken dishes I’ve had, and its reasonable price point makes it a dish I’d love to have again in the future.

End your meal at REX Steakhouse + Bar on a sweet note with their desserts. The Lemon Posset (S$12++) was super creamy, zesty and refreshing, while the Chocolate Pudding (S$10++) was rich and indulgent.

No bar is complete without a range of delectable cocktails, and REX Steakhouse + Bar’s drinks sure pack a punch. Choose from fruitier selections like the Mango Habanero Margarita (S$22++) and Fancy A Tiki (S$20++), made with lime, pineapple and passionfruit, or opt for others like the Elderflower Martini (S$20++), Pandan Sour (S$19++) and Butter The Scotch (S$18++), combining whiskey and butterscotch.
