The reasons why "Venom" is not rated R

The Tom Hardy-starring "Spider-Man" spinoff is confirmed to be PG-13

Tom Hardy stars in "Venom" as Eddie Brock a.k.a. Venom.

15 Sep – Just last month, "Venom" director Ruben Fleischer and star Tom Hardy were saying they were unsure whether their movie will be R-rated or PG-13.

Well, now we have the answer courtesy of Collider, who reported that the "Spider-Man" spinoff has been stamped with a PG-13 rating.

This is sad news for fans who had been hoping that it would take the R-rated route ala "Deadpool" but it cannot be said that this was unexpected, for a couple of reasons.

First, if it had been gunning for an R rating, it would've already revealed so during production, the way "Deadpool" did. As the aforementioned director and star demonstrated, being R-rated wasn't what the movie was really going for.

Secondly, keeping it PG-13 means Venom can easily be integrated into upcoming "Spider-Man" movies as well as into the MCU. While no one's talked of throwing the Avengers and Venom together in a movie, at least the door's open for that idea since the latter wouldn't be too "hardcore" for the MCU.

So with this rating, there might be a future where Hardy's Venom comes face-to-face with Tom Holland's Spidey or Paul Rudd's Ant-Man.

The idea for a "Spider-Man" spinoff based on the sentient alien Symbiote was first revealed by producer Avi Arad in 2007 but it wouldn't be till 10 years later that the project finally took off.

Starring Tom Hardy as journalist Eddie Brock, the most well-known incarnation of Venom, the movie follows Brock who bonds with an alien symbiote that gives him superpowers as long as they inhabit the same body.

"Venom" lands in cinemas on 4 October 2018.
