Rarely-Seen ‘Friends’ Blooper Featuring Matthew Perry Goes Viral in Minutes on Twitter

Hollywood is saying an emotional goodbye to Matthew Perry, who helped shape comedic television.

On October 28, news broke that the star died at the age of 54 from an apparent drowning at his home in Los Angeles. According to multiple reports, the Los Angeles Fire Department found him unresponsive after first responders came to the residence shortly after 4 p.m. on Saturday. At the time of his death, Matthew's family issued a statement to People, saying, "We are heartbroken by the tragic loss of our beloved son and brother. Matthew brought so much joy to the world, both as an actor and a friend. You all meant so much to him and we appreciate the tremendous outpouring of love."

Matthew is widely remembered for portraying Chandler Bing for 10 seasons on the hit sitcom Friends. Many clips from the NBC series became well-loved over the years, but one particular moment from a season 5 episode stood out from them all: the famous "pivot" scene, featuring Chandler, Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston) and Ross Geller (David Schwimmer) attempting to get a couch up the stairs into Ross' apartment.

But what we saw on television doesn't hold a candle to the joy the actors experienced behind-the-scenes. In a blooper clip, which was posted on X (formerly known as Twitter) shortly after news broke of Matthew's death, we see the Matthew, Jennifer and David hysterical laughing. As a viewer, you can't help but smile at their joy.

"The only thing funnier than the famously hilarious pivot scene is the blooper take of the famously hilarious pivot scene," read the caption of the tweet. "Matthew Perry was the best Friend of them all. 💔."

Upon the 45-second video being uploaded on the social media platform, the snippet went viral with over 2 million views. Many used the moment as an opportunity to pay tribute to Matthew's legacy in comedy.

"I hadn’t cried until now 💔," one person wrote on X. "I literally watched this less than 30 minutes before learning of his passing. So sad. R.I.P. Matthew, and thanks for all of the laughs," another penned. "Thanks for sharing this hilarious blooper take. I needed this today. #RIPMatthewPerry," a different viewer noted.

Fans weren't the only ones who honored Matthew's time on TV. Maggie Wheeler, who famously played Chandler's girlfriend Janice Hosenstein on the show, wrote a heartbreaking Instagram note honoring the time they had together on screen.

"What a loss. The world will miss you Matthew Perry," she wrote. "The joy you brought to so many in your too short lifetime will live on. I feel so very blessed by every creative moment we shared. ♥️."
