Rande Gerber Reveals What He Did with the $1 Million George Clooney Gave Him...When He Was Already Rich
Hello, have any of your friends spontaneously given you a million dollars? No? Same, but alas, none of us are friends with George Clooney.
About ten years ago, the actor famously rounded up 14 of his closest BFFs and gave them $1 million each—including Rande Gerber who...simply did not need the money due to being rich. So, what did he do with his literal bag of cash?
Speaking to People about what happened to that $1 million, Rande explained, "I gave it away. I didn't need it at the time, so I told George, 'Please, I do not want this.' Of course, George being George, he said, 'If anyone does not take this money, then no one gets it.' I knew some of his friends at the time were not doing so great, so I took it and donated it."
Rande added that "It was an incredibly thoughtful gift. But that is truly the kind of friend George is."
FYI, George told GQ about his decision to give the money away, saying his friends had all "helped me in one way or another," and he wanted to pay them back. "I thought, you know, without them I don't have any of this," he explained. "And we're all really close, and I just thought basically if I get hit by a bus, they're all in the will. So why the fuck am I waiting to get hit by a bus?”
George literally got his hands on $14 million in cash, and packed it into bags, before having his friends over. “And I just held up a map and I just pointed to all the places I got to go in the world and all the things I've gotten to see because of them. And I said, ‘How do you repay people like that?’ And I said, ‘Oh, well: How about a million bucks?’ And the fun part about it was: That was the 27th, the 28th of September. A year later, on the 27th of September, just by happenstance, was the day I got married.”
