Radiohead Issues Statement Of “Love And Support” After Attack On Istanbul Listening Party

Art rock band Radiohead responded tonight to an attack earlier today on a listening party in Istanbul for the group’s latest album, A Moon Shaped Pool, offering “love and support” to affected fans. The incident occurred at a local record shop, Velvet Indieground, which was stormed by a group of men reported to be radical Islamists outraged that the event featured alcohol consumption during the month of Ramadan. Patrons were beaten with pipes. No one was killed; the number of people injured and the extent of their injuries is not yet public.

“Our hearts go out to those attacked tonight at Velvet IndieGround in Istanbul,” the group said in a statement released by their publicist. “We hope that someday we will be able to look back on such acts of violent intolerance as things of the ancient past. For now, we can only offer our fans in Istanbul our love and support.”

On reddit, a man claiming to be one of the store’s owners posted a scathing assessment of what happened. “They were determined to kill us. We were beaten by more than 20 men with pipes in their hands, beer bottles were broken on our heads. I don’t even know how we made it out. I will share the details later guys, just hoping that no one will die.”

The event in Istanbul was part of a global listening party in support of the new album.
