Tens of millions of Americans fill prescriptions for pain meds every year.

About 80 million Americans fill prescriptions each year for medications to treat new instances of moderate to severe pain, according to one study. About half those prescriptions are written for opioid medications, which can lead to dependence and addiction. A new type of pain medication to hit the market will create an alternative — it’s not an opioid — and could open the door to more drugs of this type in the future.
