This Punk-Inspired Nike Dunk Low Argues ‘Dunks Not Dead’
Whatever criticism the Dunk is currently facing, Nike is making the case that the silhouette isn’t dead.
The Nike Dunk Low “Dunks Not Dead” features a button bearing that message as one of numerous punk-inspired features. The intentional typo in the lack of apostrophe creates a connection to the 1981 album “Punks Not Dead” by the Scottish band The Business. Frayed canvas overlays invoke the M65 field jackets popular in the subculture, and the font choices nod further to punks appropriation of military aesthetics.

A pink canvas Swoosh with its own frayed edges is confirmed to be removable via velcro, and so too is the mustache, while the tongue tag appears to follow their lead as well. Additional buttons continue to riff on punk aesthetics, and distressing carries over to the laces.
Nike has begun to dial down the number of Dunk releases, be they SB or otherwise, along with other key retro models including the Air Force 1 Low and Air Jordan 1 High because oversaturation has diminished enthusiasm. The paradox, however, is that when the Swoosh first began reviving Dunks roughly five years ago, consumers complained that they were too hard to get. And now that they’re more readily available, Dunks are sitting and Nike has an even larger problem with enthusiasm that’s eating into its business.
In addition to this Dunk Low, another continues the punk theme by paying homage to CBGB, the iconic Lower Manhattan venue that was open from 1973 until 2006.
A firm release date hasn’t yet been set for the Nike Dunk Low “Dunks Not Dead,” but it’s expected to release at some point this year through the Snkrs app and select third-party retailers. Pricing has not yet been confirmed either.
