Ever wondered why your hair has been a little on the dryer side lately? Especially since we’ve all been making a conscious effort to use our hot tools less. Well, celebrity hairstylist Castillo sat down with Seventeen.com to explain how headphones could be the culprit to dry and brittle ends.

All of the friction your hair experiences from moving the head phones back and forth, over the head and then back on the neck, roughs up your strands, causing them to break. And apparently, all of the girls with dry or color-treated hair are more at risk!

Freaking out yet? Don’t. Castillo graciously shared his tips to prevent breakage for those thinking about rocking headphones, as well as tips for healing breakage for all of the victims out there!

First, thing’s first. Use a good detangler.

Castillo recommends using one like MOP Pear Detangler to fully and safely brush your hair, and then pulling it back into a ponytail. The detangler will serve as a layer between your hair and the headphones, smoothing the strands so that there is less chance of breakage.

And second, use a leave-in treatment.

According to Castillo, using a light and hydrating leave-in treatment is also extremely beneficial. It will act as a balm, helping to heal and protect against breakage, and defrizz hair before sliding the headphones on. He recommends this Mixed Greens Leave-In Conditioner by MOP.

It’s obvi that Castillo knows what he’s talking about. He’s the secret behind our favorite GQ Woman of the Year, Ruby Rose’s badass hairstyles…
