Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Prince and Princess of Wales, surprised mourners outside Windsor Castle on Sunday, thanking them for their support and exchanging hugs, handshakes and conversation.

The Royals thanked well-wishers for taking the time to show their respects and admired the growing number of floral tributes left in memory of Queen Elizabeth II.

In a video posted on Instagram, the pair were seen chatting to members of the public when they came upon a dog in the crowd. Avid dog lovers, the couple stopped to say hello, with Prince William asking for the dog's name and Kate lovingly petting it.

Prince William greeted the dog, adding poignantly: "Doggies at this time are very important."

A touching comment that many can relate to, this sweet exchange brought a smile to many of those in the surrounding crowd.

During her 70-year reign, the Queen was well-known for her love of dogs, especially corgis. Her first was named Susan, a gift from her father for her eighteenth birthday. It has been reported that Prince Andrew and his ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, will now care for the Queen's remaining corgis at the Royal Lodge in Windsor.

This love of dogs has been passed down through the following generations of the Royal Family; William and Kate own a black cocker spaniel themselves named Orla, a gift from the brother of the Princess of Wales.
