Prince Harry Recalls Moment Queen Met 'Darling' Meghan Markle And Hugged Her 'Beloved Grandchildren'
Prince Harry has paid tribute to the 'unwavering grace and dignity' of his late grandmother, the Queen, in a statement released on Monday.
The Duke of Sussex rushed to Balmoral, Scotland after learning her health had deteriorated rapidly on Thursday, September 8, arriving shortly after news of her death hit the headlines.
The royal and his wife Meghan Markle were already in the UK last week to attend a series of engagements, such as the WellChild Awards, when news of Her Majesty's poor health surfaced.
In his first public statement following Her Majesty's death, Prince Harry referred to the royal's words following the death of her late husband, Prince Philip, writing: 'Let us echo the words she spoke after the passing of her husband, Prince Philip, words which can bring comfort to all of us now: "Life, of course, consists of final partings as well as first meetings."'
He also recalled the first time his grandmother met Markle and their two children, Archie, three, and Lilibet ('Lili'), one.
The father-of-two wrote that he cherished the 'first moment' the Queen met his 'darling wife' and hugged her 'beloved grandchildren'.
Elsewhere, he gushed: 'Granny, while this final parting brings us great sadness, I am forever grateful for all of our first meetings. You are already sorely missed, not just by us, but by the world over.'
The royal later paid ode to his father, who is now King Charles III. 'And as it comes first meetings, we now honour my father in his new role as King Charles III,' he wrote.
The 37-year-old's tribute to his father King Charles follows the new monarch's televised address to the nation, when he himself honoured his youngest son and Markle. During his speech, the King said: 'I want also to express my love for Harry and Meghan as they continue to build their lives overseas.'
The Sussexes joined Prince William and Kate Middleton (the newly-appointed Prince and Princess of Wales) for a walk around Windsor on Saturday, September 10 where they made a surprise appearance to view flowers and tributes left outside the royal residence.
Prince Harry concluded his statement about the Queen with a mention of his late grandfather, Prince Philip, writing: 'We, too, smile knowing that you and grandpa are reunited now, and both together in peace.'
