Pre-loved gifting is more popular than ever before – here's how to do it right

10 pre-loved items to gift this ChristmasHearst Owned

Just a few years ago, it would be difficult to imagine just how popular fashion resale would become, but the industry is really booming – and now, shoppers aren't only investing in pre-loved pieces for themselves, but for loved ones too. According to a recent Censuswide poll, more pre-owned gifting is taking place than ever before, and 65 per cent of Britons would now be happy to receive a second-hand gift under their Christmas tree.

"Increased climate awareness is definitely a big factor, but in addition, shopping pre-loved fashion has become a trend in itself, as customers are more likely to find unique, one-off pieces," Hanushka Toni, founder and CEO of resale platform Sellier told us of the trend. "The fashion market is flooded, so consumers are drawn to pre-loved items because there is an element of rarity that comes with owning – or gifting – a highly sought-after item; these tend to be pieces that will never be produced again, and with that comes a certain satisfaction in knowing that you have something that will no longer be made and is one of only a few in existence."

Of course, it can be daunting to invest in something secondhand, but it is all about doing your research and only buying from verified sellers, Toni advises.

"Shoppers should certainly be mindful when investing in pre-loved online, especially designer vintage when you’re investing more in a piece. I’d say the most important rule when looking for a specific item is checking the reputation and credibility of online sellers or platforms through reviews, word of mouth and Trustpilot. Secondly, ensure that a platform is using a verified and meticulous authenticity service to ensure you don’t get scammed with a fake. Scrutinise item descriptions and photos for signs of wear, damage, or alterations, and ask for additional information if needed. Finally, check the seller’s return policy so that you can apply for a refund if the item isn’t what you expected."
