Eiichiro Oda, the creator of “One Piece”, revealed that the popular manga will be made into a live-action TV drama series overseas. He made the announcement at a commemorative event of the manga’s 20th anniversary, held at Tokyo Tower last Friday (21 July).

The upcoming TV drama will be a joint project between Oda and Shueisha, which publishes the Weekly Shonen Jump manga magazine. They will be working with Tomorrow Studios, which is led by American TV series “Prison Break” producer, Marty Adelstein.

In a handwritten message screened during the announcement, Oda wrote, “There may be people who are sceptical of this, but please give us your support. We will announce more details soon, please look forward to it!”

Oda also said he has had plans to create a live-action version since three years ago. He promised he will not disappoint the fans who have supported “One Piece” for the past 20 years.

“One Piece” began its manga series on Weekly Shonen Jump 1997 issue 34. The 13th anime movie of “One Piece”, titled “One Piece Film Gold”, was released in Japanese cinemas last year, and was shown in local cinemas earlier this year.
