Poldark continued last night (4 August) in typically heartbreaking fashion, with the continuation of George Warleggan’s deteriorating mental health storyline, Demelza’s upset about Ross becoming close to his potential son Valentine, and Dwight revealing his grief over baby Sarah’s death is still impacting his life.

Just when we thought things couldn’t get any more tear-inducing, Geoffrey Charles tugged at our heart strings in a major way.

It was revealed that Cecily Hanson’s father Ralph had arranged an engagement between his young daughter and George Warleggan.

Having grown close to Geoffrey Charles, Cecily told him her news.

What followed was a heartbreaking moment in which Geoffrey Charles confessed his love to Cecily, only for her to tell him they’re merely friends.

Devastated, Geoffrey Charles met with Ross while mourning Elizabeth at her grave, telling him about the cruel twist of fate which has betrothed his first love to the man who’s always been so cruel to him both while his mother was alive and after she died.

Viewers took to social media to share in Geoffrey Charles' pain.

Fans of Geoffrey Charles and Cecily got a little bit of happiness towards the end of the episode, though, when the latter revealed her true loving feelings and suggested the pair elope.

Time will tell whether the young love birds can be together, or if Cecily’s engagement to George will end in the exchanging of vows…

One thing’s for sure, there’s going to be more heartache before Poldark’s final series is finished.

Poldark continues Sundays at 9pm on BBC One.
