Pixar’s Ratatouille Live: The Future Of How We Watch Films?

In case Disney Pixar fans didn’t have enough to be excited about this year with both ‘Inside Out’ and ‘The Good Dinosaur’ released in cinemas, one of their classic films is being prepared for a special screening in London.

As you may recall, Pixar in Concert took place in 2013 and was an animated screening with a difference: it comprised of a collection of iconic songs and scores from ‘Toy Story’ to ‘Brave’, performed live at the Royal Albert Hall as it accompanied big-screen clips from the movies themselves.

The event was a big hit amongst Pixar lovers in the UK, and now another of its kind is about to be shown this October.

This’ll be the first time ‘Ratataouille’, or indeed any Pixar flick, has had an accompanying live orchestra throughout the entire duration of the movie, and it’ll be quite an experience for anyone who can get tickets.

It’s certainly an interesting and somewhat unique way of engaging with a film, it has to be said. Going to the theatre, we get to see the actors perform live, adding to an overall unique, entertaining experience, so why not for the movies?

Can live music blended with popular movies have the same, desired affect?

With a screening of the film set for a one-off showing at the end of October, Michael Giacchino’s classic score will be played live on stage by the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra, which will titillate fans that recognise the sounds that won its composer a Grammy and gained an Oscar nomination.

Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ is also scheduled to play with an orchestra, which could open a path for a new way to interact with movies.

But is it all really that new of a thing?

After all, we’ve seen Secret Cinema do something similar for years - where the production re-enacts key moments during the film or immerses audiences into the world beforehand - so maybe this interactive element of movie watching could be something that takes off.

What’s good here is the combo of being able to watch a film you love with the experience of going to a live concert - and if the two mediums merge seamlessly, then it’l be an ideal way to enrich a simple trip to the cinema.

You can catch ‘Ratatouille’ in Concert on 28 October, at the Royal Albert Hall.
