Our zodiac signs tell us a lot about ourselves and how we interact with those around us, but they can also reveal a lot about our pets.

Yes, just as humans have a Sun sign — which is determined by your birth date and presents your core personality and how you behave — dogs and cats have a zodiac sign as well.

Not only do their signs reveal a lot about their personality and how they interact with other pets, but they can also provide insight into who makes their most compatible human.

To get a better understanding of each pet zodiac sign, PEOPLE spoke with astrologer and bestselling author Lisa Stardust for their insight.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

Characteristics

Just as Aries humans act with urgency, an Aries pet is known to be “very rambunctious and fun-loving,” Stardust notes. They also tend to be athletic, meaning they love taking walks, going to the dog run and exploring outside.

When it comes to how they interact with other pets, they will “want to play endlessly,” Stardust says, adding they “will be energetic and always want to run side-by-side with others. The flilp side of that is, just as human Aries can sometimes be temperamental, they might get a “little bit fierce and act out when they sees squirrels or birds fluttering about,” Stardust adds.

Compatibility

When it comes to their most compatible pet owner, Aries are a good fit with Libra, the Air sign represented by the scales. As Aries pets are inclined to be adventurous and sometimes impulsive, a Libra pet owner “will be able to make sure that they maintain balance.”

Taurus (April 20-May 20)

Characteristics

For Taurus pups, specifically, they "like the finer things in life,” Stardust says, adding they will “want to receive gifts and new toys weekly, as well as have home-cooked meals from their pet owner.” When it comes to their favorite activities, Stardust notes that they might be prone to “taking extra naps and barking at those who disrupt their peace.”

Taurus cats have a similar outlook on life as they “want a calm home life and numerous toys.” However, Stardust points out that they might be territorial when it comes to other pets as they’ll fight “over their belongings and food.”

Compatibility

As the Taurus sign is known to be incredibly loyal, they need a pet parent who will offer that in return. According to Stardust, Taurus pets will get along best with Scorpio humans as the Water sign “will be the most attentive to the pet who longs for affection at all times.”

Gemini (May 21-June 20)

Characteristics

Just as a Gemini human is known to be a social butterfly, Gemini dogs and cats “have the desire and need to communicate the most with each other and their owners,” Stardust says. As such, you’ll likely find this pet “purring, hissing, and barking whenever they want something or are irritated.”

Though, Stardust notes, they are great with other pets. “They can have a lot of fun when they are playing together because they have a spunky and social side to them that makes them accessible to be around,” Stardust says.

Compatibility

As Geminis are known to be curious creatures, this pet sign will “vibe best” with a Sagittarius parent as they’re known to long for that same sense of adventure. Additionally, a Sagittarius will help the Gemini pet “step out of their comfort zone when they're bored with the mundane.”

Cancer (June 21-July 22)

Characteristics

As Cancer signs are known to be sentimental, you’ll often find this pet wanting to cuddle, either with their parent or with another pet. “They're calm but always want hugs and affection when connecting with other pets,” Stardust adds of their interactions with other animals.

Though they can often be “very tender and chill,” Stardust adds that they “can act up during new and full moons,” since the “moon is their planetary ruler.”

Compatibility

The practical Capricorn makes the best owner for Cancer pets as they will offer them the stability and routine that they crave. “Capricorn pet owners are consistent for them,” Stardust adds.

Leo (July 23-Aug. 22)

Characteristics

Just as human Leos love to be the center of attention, pet Leos always want to show off, whether that be strutting their stuff on walks or getting praise from others, including humans and pets.

For dogs specifically, “they'll be the leader of the pack at the dog park and at home,” Stardust adds. On the flip side, a Leo cat “will be a diva by being the ruler of the throne and home.”

Compatibility

Stardust notes that Leo pets are most compatible with Aquarius humans “because they are the happiest to share the spotlight with others and won't have a problem having their pet upstage them.”

Virgo (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

Characteristics

According to Stardust, a Virgo pet is known to be very “compassionate and analytical.” While Virgo cats “want to reflect by looking out the window and peering into the street while gazing at birds,” Virgo dogs “will be a little bit more reserved, wanting to think about matters.”

When it comes to how they interact with other pets, Virgos will be friendly, but Stardust warns that they have limitations on “how much time they spend out connecting with other animals,” simply because “they don't like to give all of their energy to others and like to focus attention on themselves.”

Compatibility

Virgo pets will be most in sync with Pisces parents, as they’ll “need someone who can understand them on an emotional and intuitive level,” Stardust says.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

Characteristics

Like a typical Libra, this pet loves the finer things in life, and is “always looking forward to indulging in decadence,” Stardust says.

That being said, they do like spending time with other fur friends, because “they are very partnership-oriented animals, and they like to be in the mix, constantly interacting with others,” Stardust says, noting that “other pets will flock to be around them due to their chill demeanor.”

Compatibility

Libra pets are the best match with Aries humans as they “need someone who can advocate for them and always defend them against others," Stardust says.

Scorpio (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Characteristics

Scorpio pets can be “a tad secretive and mysterious," which means it's up to you to decode their barking and burring when they try to “express themselves,” Stardust says.

In addition to requiring you to do some sleuthing to decipher their wishes, Scorpio pets are known to be “very emotional” and can be a little “defensive when interacting with others — especially if they pick up negative energy since they are very magical and intuitive,” Stardust says.

Compatibility

As a result of their ever-changing moods, Stardust suggests that a Taurus parent would be best for this pet sign as they “need a loyal parent who will put up with them.”

Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21)

Characteristics

Naturally, a Sagittarius pet is an adventure-seeker, with Stardust adding that they’ll “want to spend time outside wandering around town and always looking for a new path.” Additionally, because of their “fun-loving and impulsive nature,” they long for road trips with their owner and taking in the sights.

Though Sagittarius pets are super friendly and love trying new things, they also yearn "for independence.” Stardust adds that when interacting with other pets, the Fire sign will want to “be the center of the pack and the one who barks loudest — but who everyone wants to be around.”

Compatibility

With their love of traveling, a Sagittarius pet’s ideal owner is a Gemini “because they're always looking to have new adventures and interact with others,” according to Stardust.

Capricorn (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Characteristics

Unlike other pets, Capricorns “can be more reserved than others,” Stardust says, though they can still be affectionate when they want to be. “Love is shown often through mundane acts like resting their head on their pet parent's lap or playing catch with their pet parent,” Stardust says, adding that they like to spend most of their time solo, “contemplating their thoughts” or “organizing their area of the home to show off their toys.”

When it comes to interacting with other pets, a fun activity or endeavor is top of mind for them.

Compatibility

Being a sensitive and loyal zodiac sign, Capricorn pets “thrive best if they have a more affectionate pet parent like Cancer, who will give them hugs and TLC,” Stardust says.

Aquarius (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Characteristics

Pet owners be warned: the Aquarius pet is a rebel, according to Stardust. Just as an Aquarius human is known to be unpredictable and spirited, an Aquarius will stand their ground. “When there is an issue at home, they'll fight back against their pet parent if they feel as though they are right,” Stardust says.

The same goes for how they interact with their fur friends. An Aquarius pet, particularly a dog, will “assert themselves amid injustices in their pack,” according to Stardust.

Compatibility

Aquarius dogs and cats are best suited for a Leo parent as they “are very generous at heart and will put their pet first.” Stardust adds that “a Leo Sun pet parent will be open for anything fun and won't put limits on their freedom.”

Pisces (Feb. 19-March 20)

Characteristics

As this zodiac sign often lives in its own bubble, a Pisces pet “will want to be lost in their thoughts and imagination when at home because they are dreamy,” Stardust says.

When it comes to playing with other dogs or cats, they’ll “want to be a part of the scene” but only on their terms. “They must be given attention otherwise they'll run off,” Stardust says, adding they want to spend time with animals they connect with.

Compatibility

According to Stardust, a Pisces pet meshes well with a Virgo pet parent “who can be more logical and practical, regimenting their daily routines since their heads are often lost in the clouds.”
