Peter Copping is the new artistic director at Lanvin, the brand announced on Thursday.

"Jeanne Lanvin was a visionary of her time whose interests and passions extended far beyond fashion, as do my own. I am extremely honored to have been chosen as Artistic Director of Lanvin and to be able, along with the atelier and teams, to write the next chapter for this iconic house," the British designer said, in a statement.

An alum of Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art in London, Copping's fashion resume is stacked: Most recently, he was the head of couture at Balenciaga, but before that, he spent over a decade at Louis Vuitton overseeing womenswear under Marc Jacobs, worked at Nina Ricci and was named Oscar de la Renta's successor following the designer's passing.

Copping's appointment comes at a pivotal time for Lanvin, which has been undergoing a revamp since Alber Elbaz left in 2015, but hasn't really found its footing. Over the last nine years, the brand has cycled through three artistic directors: Bouchra Jarrar, Olivier Lapidus and, most recently, Bruno Sialelli, who departed in April 2023 after a four-year run.

Lanvin is trying to re-establish its identity in the luxury market, with a focus on adding a contemporary edge to its storied French roots. In a statement, Deputy CEO Siddhartha Shukla described Copping's appointment as "an important milestone in the renaissance of one of the great French maisons": "I am confident that with Peter's vision and technical rigor and the continued perseverance of our teams globally, we will identify a new frontier in fashion and deliver beauty and results in equal measure."

Eric Chan, CEO of Lanvin Group, added, "I am certain that Peter's outstanding talent and capacity to reinterpret the codes of the Maison with curiosity and innovation make him the ideal candidate to drive success for Lanvin. This new chapter for the house fits perfectly with our commitment to meeting the evolving needs and desires of our clients."

The company hasn't announced when we can expect Copping's Lanvin debut, but the designer is to start overseeing womenswear and menswear effective this September.
