Lady Gaga took the stage to sing the national anthem during President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday, belting out “The Star Spangled Banner” outside the U.S. Capitol in front of a much smaller crowd than usual, because of COVID-19 and security restrictions. She brought her signature flair to the occasion, dressed in a poofy bright-red skirt and navy blue jacket with an oversize gold eagle pin her left breast. And naturally, she also belted into a matching gold microphone with her characteristic melismas and vocal runs. Gaga, whose real name is Stephanie Germanotta, took the stage at 11:30 a.m. ET to welcome Biden, and she’s one of several stars who performed at the event, including fellow pop icon Jennifer Lopez and country singer Garth Brooks. Gaga said in a tweet before the inauguration that “singing our National Anthem for the American People is my honor. I will sing during a ceremony, a transition, a moment of change — between POTUS 45 and 46. For me, this has great meaning,” she said. “My intention is to acknowledge our past, be healing for our present, and passionate for a future where we work together lovingly. I will sing to the hearts of all people who live on this land.” This isn’t the first time Gaga has performed for Biden, or the Anthem — her 2016 rendition of the song at Super Bowl 50 was critically acclaimed, and she’s been friends with Biden for years. Biden introduced Gaga at the 2016 Oscars for her “Til It Happens to You” performance, and worked on her campaign against sexual assault called It’s On Us. Gaga also joined his campaign rally in Pittsburgh in November, where she reiterated her support for Biden’s campaign. “I love Joe. Joe’s my new Pennsylvania guy, and I love nothing more than this moment, for this time, for you and I,” Gaga said at the time. Watch her performance above. When “This Is Us” is away– well, no one really played last night. But CBS finished first in primetime! Hit NBC drama “This Is Us” ran a rerun on Tuesday when the previously planned original episode was pushed last-minute due to COVID-related production delays. Though the series settled for a series low last week in Nielsen’s Live + Same Day ratings, a “This Is Us” record-low is still pretty darn good — especially these days. Joe Biden Sworn in as 46th President of the US
Joe Biden was sworn in on Wednesday afternoon as the 46th president of the United States. During the ceremony, Kamala Harris was sworn in as the nation’s 49th vice president — becoming not only the first woman to hold the position, but the first Black and South Asian person as well. The event was attended by outgoing vice president Mike Pence as well as previous presidents such as Barack Obama, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton, along with their spouses. Notably, outgoing president Donald Trump did not attend, nor did his wife. Trump was the first president in almost 152 years to skip his successor’s inauguration. The rioters, like some Republican lawmakers, aligned themselves with Trump and backed his baseless insistence that his loss was attributable to widespread voter fraud. Netflix Orders ‘Heartstopper’ TV Series Based on Alice Oseman’s LGBTQ Graphic Novels
Netflix has ordered a TV adaptation of the YA graphic novel series “Heartstopper,” the streaming service said Wednesday. Based on Alice Oseman’s series of comics, which originally launched as a web comic on Tumblr and Tapas, “Heartstopper” tells the story of Charlie and Nick, who become friends at an all-boys school in Kent and quickly discover a romance blossoming between them. As they fall head over heels for each other, they realize there is a strong community of allies and friends around them who help them to embrace their authentic selves, but also teach them there is no “right way” to come out. The series, which will be produced by See-Saw Films, consists of eight 30-minute episodes, all written by Oseman. Euros Lyn (“Sherlock,” “Doctor Who”) is attached to direct the show. Executive producers include See-Saw’s Patrick Walters, Jamie Laurenson and Hakan Kousetta and the company’s joint managing directors Iain Canning and Emile Sherman, alongside Lyn. Zorana Piggott is a producer. Yes, Secret Service Really Did Probe John Mulaney After ‘SNL’ Monologue Joke About Trump
The U.S. Secret Service really did open an investigation into John Mulaney after he made a joke about President Trump on “SNL,” and that probe now appears to be closed with no findings of wrongdoings. Last month, the comedian Mulaney told Jimmy Kimmel that one of his jokes from an “SNL” monologue last February about the Leap Year, Julius Caesar and a veiled reference to Donald Trump landed him in some hot water with the Secret Service and that a file was opened on him. (“Am I stoked there’s a file on me? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it in the moment? Not so much.”) The Associated Press then on Tuesday obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request that very file from the Secret Service. It lists in detail the text of Mulaney’s routine (the delivery is all off though) and mentions that though the bureau did not directly contact Mulaney, it did contact NBC’s Thomas McCarthy, the global chief security officer and senior vice president at NBC Universal. Also Read: John Mulaney and Andy Samberg to Star in 'Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers' The Secret Service found that Mulaney had made “inappropriate jokes about President Trump” but also notes that he made no direct threats toward the President. The file on Mulaney was opened in March and was closed in December, five days after Mulaney mentioned the file on “Kimmel.” It’s no surprise the joke in question raised a few eyebrows, and Mulaney said it also earned the ire of right-wing media, with the Secret Service report even citing a Breitbart article titled: “SNL: John Mulaney Jokes that Senators Should Stab Trump Like Julius Caesar.” Also Read: John Mulaney Joins 'Late Night With Seth Meyers' as Staff Writer - Watch His First Sketch (Video) Mulaney said in his monologue, “Another thing that happened under Julius Caesar, he was such a powerful maniac that all the senators grabbed knives, and they stabbed him to death. That would be an interesting thing if we brought that back now.” He then said that he asked his lawyer if he was allowed to make that joke. “He said, let me call another lawyer, and that lawyer said yes.” Perhaps contradicting the Secret Service report, Mulaney said previously said he did speak with someone at the bureau and said that whomever it was (they are secret) was at least polite. “They were very nice in the interview. Netflix Stock Soars to Record High After Topping 200 Million Subscribers
Netflix hit a new all-time high on Wall Street on Wednesday morning, one day after the streaming giant reported it topped analyst and company estimates by adding another 8.5 million new subscribers during Q4 2020. The new subscribers pushed Netflix to 203.65 million accounts overall, making it the first company to cross the 200 million subscriber threshold in the process. Both analysts and Netflix itself had projected the company would add around 6 million subscribers during the quarter. Netflix shares immediately moved higher on Wednesday morning, jumping to the company’s new all-time high of $577.77 within the first hour of trading. (Netflix’s stock price had briefly crossed $575 per share last year.) An hour and a half into trading, Netflix’s stock was up 14.2% on the day at $572.92 per share. That put Netflix well on its way to setting a new record closing price as well on Wednesday. Netflix’s previous high at the end of a trading day was set on September 1, 2020, when Netflix shares closed at $556.55. Netflix’s Q4 report, beyond the subscriber figure, gave investors a few more interesting nuggets. Two key takeaways from Netflix’s letter to shareholders on Tuesday: Netflix said it plans on being cash-flow neutral by the end of 2021 and cash-flow positive every year after. (Netflix said its “very close” to being free cash-flow positive after posting -$138 million net cash flow during Q4.) The company also said “we believe we no longer have a need to raise external financing for our day-to-day operations.” Also Read: What Joe Biden's 'Complicated' Ties to Big Tech Mean for Antitrust Crackdowns and Content Moderation On the financial side, Netflix reported earnings per share of $1.19, compared to the $1.36 EPS analysts had projected. Revenue of $6.64 billion matched analyst estimates, although its 21.5% year-over-year sales growth fell short of the 30% year-over-year growth Netflix enjoyed during the same period a year earlier. Investors don’t seem as worried about falling short of Wall Street’s earnings estimates, though, as long as Netflix continues to add subscribers at a healthy rate. Netflix on Tuesday also said it intends to “maintain $10 billion-$15 billion in gross debt” and will “explore” stock buybacks, something the company hasn’t done since 2011. Heading into Q4, Netflix had added 28.1 million subscribers during the first three quarters of 2020, which was already more than the company added in all of 2019. The company finished its record-setting year with 37 million new customers joining the fold, thanks in large part to the coronavirus pandemic, which accelerated the streaming revolution by forcing millions of people to stay inside, sitting on their couches. More than 80% of Netflix’s subscriber gains last year came from outside of North America.
