Brad Pitt and Gwyneth Paltrow at the 68th Academy Awards in 1996.

Remember when Brad and Gwyneth were a thing? Remember when you were nothing if you weren’t wearing a slipdress and coordinating wrap to a formal function? Remember when Gwyneth was still so green, she clutched said wrap with a death grip (smoke your weekly American Spirit and chill, Gwynnie)? Remember the halcyon, pre-Bennifer days when not every couple had to have a stupid, cutesy portmanteau like Bryneth or Gwad?

That is, until you realize that in 1996, Brad and Gwyneth were still a thing, Kate Winslet was the newest ingénue on the block, and Mel Gibson was still a respected actor and director, not yet a rum-soaked has-been given to anti-Semitic tirades.

As we await the glamour and pageantry of this Sunday’s Academy Awards, let’s take a peek at what said pageantry looked like just 20 years ago. Here’s to a simpler time, when Gap turtlenecks passed credibly as eveningwear (looking at you, Sharon Stone), and Susan Sarandon made us all realize irons were overrated.
