In case you, too, were wondering who the dapper man sitting next to Andrew Lloyd Webber at King Charles III’s coronation last weekend is, then fear not, dear reader! You are far from alone. A viral conspiracy theory ensued at the Westminster Abbey ceremony on May 6 when a broadcast showed a quick shot of a man donning large glasses, gray hair, and a large mustache. And he is none other than Welsh composer Sir Karl Jenkins!

Initially, though, social media netizens immediately spread a rumor that the mystery person was none other than Meghan Markle (lol), who obviously did not attend the coronation with her husband Prince Harry and opted to stay at the couple’s California home to celebrate their son Archie’s birthday, which fell on the same day. I’ll let the tweets speak for themselves:

Given all of this ^^, Sir Karl Jenkins took to TikTok yesterday to clear his name in the most *chef’s kiss* way possible. Observe:

In the post, the legendary composer—whose song “Tros y Garreg” was actually played during the ceremony—lightheartedly confirmed he was neither the duchess in a large wig nor a thief dressed in disguise trying to “steal the Crown Jewels” (which…let’s give credit to whoever started the second rumor for their imagination).

“I understand there has been a lot of interest in me since I appeared at the coronation of King Charles III,” he began. “I was there because I’d written some music for the service. I was quite surprised that some people thought I was Meghan Markle in disguise. Someone wrote I was there, whoever I was, to steal the Crown Jewels!”

“I look this way all the time,” he said. “I’ve had this mustache since I was 18 years old. It was very trendy then. So that’s me…nothing sinister about it or surprising at all.”

Lloyd Webber, for his part, hilariously tweeted about the matter as well, saying, “I can confirm it probably wasn’t MM and had no jewels on his person as far as I could see. —ALW”
