The Crown's Olivia Colman and Beauty and the Beast's Luke Evans have joined the cast of Netflix's new Christmas Carol reinterpretation Scrooge: A Christmas Carol.

Evans is set to voice the titular Scrooge in the animated feature, while Colman will voice Past (who is presumably The Ghost of Christmas Past).

The new musical version of this Charles Dickens classic will be brought to life by Scottish director Stephen Donnelly, who is best known for his work as art director on Prime Video's Emmy Award winning animation Lost in Oz.

Donnelly revealed how his version of a Christmas classic will differ from those that have come before.

"It’s been a fascinating challenge to adapt such a beloved and often-told story," he said. "I think this version will give those who know A Christmas Carol all the things they expect, but not as they’ve experienced them before.

"There are more than enough psychedelic, time-travelling and musical surprises to keep those familiar with the story on the edge of their seats, while the authentic essence of Dickens has been retained for those coming completely fresh to the classic tale.

"I can’t wait to share this new version of A Christmas Carol with the world and sincerely hope audiences embrace it this year and for many to come," he added.

Joining Colman and Evans in the star-studded cast are The Devil in Me's Jessie Buckley, Lovesick's Johnny Flynn, Les Misérables' Fra Fee, Hamilton's Giles Terera, Aladdin's Trevor Dion Nicholas, and Game of Thrones' Jonathan Pryce.

The CG animation will feature re-imagined songs from double Academy Award and Grammy award-winner Leslie Bricusse, who's the genius behind the score for Doctor Dolittle and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, among others.

Scrooge: A Christmas Carol is due for release in December.
