Oliver Stone’s Snowden Is A ‘Must See’ Says The Kremlin

It looks as though ‘Snowden’ has some pretty powerful allies…

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Kremlin has some pretty supportive words for the upcoming biopic about Edward Snowden.

“Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has praised Oliver Stone’s Snowden, which is opening Thursday in Russia,” they revealed. “Peskov was quoted by Russian news agency RIA Novosti as saying that the movie, centering on NSA leaker Edward Snowden (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), is ‘top quality’.”

And his full statement was even more gushing.

“[It has] a brilliant script, and, what is most important, it is nearly a documentary,” he said. “This is an excellent opportunity for everyone to learn what actually happened. It’s a must-see.”

He added that he would recommend people in Europe and the U.S. watch this movie.

‘Snowden’ documents the real-life exploits of Edward Snowden - the NSA whistle blower who was forced into hiding after leaking classified documents which provided details of mass surveillance projects in the USA in partnership with Australia, Canada and the UK.

Of course, since 2013 Edward Snowden has been hiding out in Russia - forced to stay in the country or face extradition to the USA on charges of violating the Espionage Act of 1917 and theft of government property.

Given their support for Snowden in the past, it should come as little surprise that the Kremlin would back the whistle blower’s big screen appearance. Especially since the man himself is said to have made a cameo appearance in the movie.

“Earlier this month, RIA Novosti reported that Snowden, who has lived in exile in Russia since the summer of 2013, appears in the movie in a cameo and that the version to be released in Russia is four minutes longer than that slated for release in the U.S.”

It hasn’t yet been revealed what these extra four minutes contain… but presumably it’s not any more state secrets.

“The script for Snowden, written by Stone and Kieran Fitzgerald, is loosely based on Russian lawyer Anatoly Kucherena’s book Vremya spruta (Time of the Octopus) and British journalist Luke Harding’s nonfiction book The Snowden Files.”

‘Snowden’ stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Edward Snowden, who is joined by Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Scott Eastwood, Timothy Olyphant, Rhys Ifans and Nicolas Cage.

‘Snowden’ debuts at the London Film Festival on 15 October 2016.
