'No More Star Wars 7 Trailers' Says JJ Abrams (But Expect TV Ads)

‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ director JJ Abrams has said definitively that there will not be another trailer for the highly-anticipated movie, but that there will be TV commercials (obviously).

This likely means that bar a few seconds here or there in the forthcoming TV ads, we’ve seen everything we’re going to see of 'Episode VII’ until it finally hits cinemas in December.

He made the comments in a red carpet interview with Extra at the GLSEN Respect Awards held last night in Los Angeles. Asked what’s next he said: “The next thing is really gonna be the movie… There will be commercials, but no more trailers.”

Abrams was also asked about the #BoycottStarWars social media campaign started by a relative minority of “fans” claiming the movie is anti-white.

The director first pointed to a tweet sent out ahead of the final trailer’s release on 19 October, then added: “It all sort of speaks for itself. The beautiful thing was the enormous tsunami of response that drowned out the ugliness.”

As for the lack of any future trailers, while that may frustrate some fans, to us it makes perfect sense. The 'Force Awakens’ marketing campaign has been absolutely pitch-perfect - wonderfully fostering the hype and showing just enough to excite people without ever giving away the plot.

It flies in the face of most modern blockbuster marketing campaigns, that give far too much away out of a crippling fear of failure - and it is all the better for it.

This is also the reason why the absence of Mark Hamill’s Luke Skywalker from marketing materials has gotten some people in a tizz. There’s not some big conspiracy, they’re holding him back to get people to watch the movie. It’s a simple marketing trick, but none not nearly used enough.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ will be released in the UK on 17 December, and everywhere else on 18 December.
