Nightmare On Elm Street To Be Rebooted Again

One, two, Freddy’s coming for you… yet again.

Yes, it’s been reported that 1980s horror franchise ‘A Nightmare On Elm Street’ is set to be revived once more - with hopes for greater success than the much-maligned 2010 effort.

According to The Tracking Board, New Line Cinema plan to completely disregard the existing reboot, which saw Jackie Earle Haley take over from original actor Robert Englund in the role of dream demon Freddy Krueger, and produce “a fresh new take” on the property.

Cast, director and producer announcements are all a long way off, it would seem, but screenwriting duties have reportedly been handed to ‘Orphan’ writer David Leslie Johnson, also assigned to pen Warner Bros’ recently announced ‘Dungeons and Dragons’ reboot.

The iconic horror series began over 30 years ago with writer-director Wes Craven’s 1984 classic ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street,’ which made a genre icon out of Robert Englund, a scream queen out of leading lady Heather Langenkamp, and established New Line Cinema as a mini-major to be reckoned with.

And, of course, it also spawned seven sequels, including 1994′s offbeat meta-sequel ‘New Nightmare,’ and 2003 monster mash-up ‘Freddy Vs Jason.’

However, the 2010 take from reboot factory Platinum Dunes (Michael Bay’s production house, also responsible for the 21st century revivals of ‘The Texas Chainsaw massacre’ and ‘Friday the 13th’) fell flat with fans and critics. Which wasn’t too surprising as, well, it was very poor indeed.

As The Tracking Board point out, this ‘Nightmare’ revival comes as a number of other slasher favourites including ‘Halloween,’ ‘Friday the 13th’ and ‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ also have new takes on the way.

Should horror fans be delighted to see their old favourites brought back once again, or be left grumbling about the seemingly never-ending reboot cycle? Well either way, we’re anticipating a flurry of fan interest once the inevitable rumours about Freddy’s casting kick off…
