Nicki Minaj Skips Singing "Starships" During New Year's Eve Performance
New year, new Nicki. At least, that's what Nicki Minaj wants her beloved Barbz to look forward to. The rapper performed a slew of her chart-topping songs—including "Super Bass" and her new Pink Friday 2 fan favorite "FTCU"—during a performance at E11EVEN Miami on New Year's Eve. How! Ever! Nicki isn't particularly a fan of all her biggest hits. 😬
In a fan-posted TikTok, Nicki begins singing the first few lines to her 2012 track "Starships" before instructing the DJ to cut it short. She yelled "Sike" into the mic multiple times before explaining, "Hold on, I don't perform that song no more, y'all." The crowd then let out confused murmurs, to which she replied, "I don't like it. What y'all want me to do? Stupid song."
Instead, she kept the performance moving by rapping her Pink Friday breakout, "Super Bass."
"Starships," which was originally released in February 2012, leaned more into the artist's pop side and debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It eventually peaked at No. 5 during the week of April 7, 2012. And, of course, it reached virality a few years later thanks to the infamous "Ninki Minjaj" meme born on Vine (RIP 🥲).
During her New Year's performance, fans took to the comments section of the clip on TikTok to share their frustration and confusion.
"Why... it's what got us all loving you. DON'T FORGET ABOUT US," one fan mused, while another chimed in, "'Starships' is still paying her bills, and is a fan favourite song." Some also got a kick out of the rapper's silly personality, writing, "🤣🤣🤣😫😫 She plays too much."
Others alluded to the fact that Nicki might not include the summer-inspired song on the set list for her upcoming Pink Friday 2 tour. "So we not getting this song at the concert 😭," one Barb added.
Aside from the "Starships" sitch, Nicki sent love to Barbz on social media after the performance. "If you're reading this; Wishing you blessings on blessings, prosperity, peace, joy, great health & wisdom. You did it. You made it. You got through 2023 even when you didn’t think you had it in you. Look at you being the best you you’ve ever been!"
She continued, "Go easy on yourself. This is only the beginning. It's ok. You can breathe. 🎀 2024 is your time. Show TF OUT!!! DONT WASTE ANOTHER MINUTE!!!!! It's GO SZN!!!! LETS GO!!!!!! 🎀♥️💟😉😘🙏🏽"
Well... perhaps "Starships" isn't meant to fly in Nicki's new era, but we'll never forget the iconic track and all the memories it brings.
