NFL Re-Ups Commissioner Roger Goodell Through 2027

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s contract has been extended through March 2027.

The 64-year-old Goodell has been league commissioner since 2006. The re-up is his fourth. No financial terms were given by the league, which announced the move in a terse press release.

It is widely understood that Goodell’s contract will make him the best-paid commissioner in sports. Over the past couple of years, he has sealed rights deals with major media companies, Amazon and YouTube worth in the range of $125 billion. The league also launched its own streaming outlet, NFL+, which includes mobile rights previously licensed to Verizon and Yahoo.

Any league commissioner serves at the pleasure of club owners, and in the Goodell Era owners have seen their fortunes grow considerably. Along with media rights and streaming, the rise of the NFL to the status of kingmaker in the television and advertising business has increased the value of franchises. The Denver Broncos changed hands last year in a $4.5 billion deal, and the Washington Commanders went for $6.05 billion, transactions that are nearly 10 times the amount of the last team sale before Goodell became commissioner.

In 2020, the NFL signed a new collective bargaining agreement with league players. That agreement has an opt-out in 2027, which could coincide with the expiration of Goodell’s new pact. The contract includes clauses for succession or another extension, the Associated Press reported.
