YG′s Yang Hyun Suk Shares the Origin of ‘Seo Taiji and Boys’

Most know him as the creator of Big Bang and 2NE1, but not many realize that Yang Hyun Suk was also part of a popular idol group in the past.

With 2012 marking the 20th anniversary since debut for Seo Taiji and Boys, Yang Hyun Suk shared various memories from his active years on SBS Healing Camp on May 14.

On how he came to meet Seo Taiji, Yang Hyun Suk said, “I was working with Park Nam Jung and Friends when I met Seo Taji at a nightclub. Seo Taiji first approached me, asking what he needs to do to learn how to dance.”

Believing that he was the best dancer of that time, Yang Hyun Suk felt cautious around the unfamiliar Seo Taiji, and tried to discourage Seo Taiji from learning by asking for three advanced payments of 1,500,000 won. But to his surprise, Seo Taji immediately transferred over 4,500,000 won and their lessons started.

Yang Hyun Suk added, “Seo Taiji filmed all of my dancing like a stalker and practiced with it. But because he practiced while watching the mirrored videos, all of his movements were the opposite.”

After being discharged from the army due to a heart condition, Yang Hyun Suk said, “While I was in the army, Seo Taiji was preparing his solo album and the song I Know was already created. I told him that I Know must fit well with the dance and fashion, and that instead of learning the dance from someone, he should just create a team with professional dancers.” Then he added, “I waited until Seo Taiji asked me to be on his team then pretended like I didn’t have a choice.”

On Lee Juno’s addition to the group, Yang Hyun Suk said, “Lee Juno was a lot older than me and I thought it would be too hard to hard for him to be in the group. Eventually, he approached me and asked why I didn’t recruit him. We used to say that if one of us became a singer, we would do it together, so Lee Juno was probably really upset with me.”

Lee Juno was then added to the group a month before its debut and because of this, Yang Hyun Suk revealed that Lee Juno’s voice is not included in the first album of Seo Taiji and Boys.

Yang Hyun Suk then said, “Because I met a great artist like Seo Taiji, my dancing and ideas were able to be used. 99 percent of Seo Taiji and Boys was all Seo Taiji,” giving the credit to the founder of the group.
