The Voices of "Rio 2"
Now that Blu and Jewel are a pair of lovebirds with a new generation of Macaws in the nest, the blue-feathered birds are about to leave the bustling city of Rio to answer the call of the wild Amazon, where Blu may or may not feel comfortable in, especially with a few unexpected relatives in the mix.
Before "Rio 2" is released in local cinemas on 10 April, here's a quick guide on the musical birds that will be in "Rio 2", with their old and new friends and the voice actors playing them!
Blu
Jesse Eisenberg returns as lead bird Blu, who is now father to three young birds. Living a sheltered life for most of his life and just recently learning how to fly, Blu is not too keen of going out into the dangerous wild. Not until he has everything prepared from GPS devices to the deadly sprock. Even so, will Blu ever be ready to embrace the wild side of his nature?
Jewel
Anne Hathaway reprises as the headstrong Jewel, who brought up the idea of taking the kids out to the Amazon to bring them up as nature intended. When an unexpected reunion brings her back to her family and an old flame, will Jewel choose to stay or go back to the nest she had built with Blu and her children?
Pedro
Black Eyed Peas member will.i.am will voice the red rapping cardinal Pedro. After running the talent pool of Rio dry, Pedro is out looking for new musical talents before the Carnaval and joins the mackaws' family trip to find some exotic voices from the jungles of the Amazon. Hope he doesn't make the trip feel awkward.
Nico
Joining Pedro on the search for a new voice is his yellow canary best pal, Nico, with his trademark bottlecap hat, once again voiced by Jamie Foxx. Who knows maybe they should start a talent reality show while they are there?
Roberto
Welcoming Jewel back to the jungle is her old flame, Roberto. Being the ideal son-in-law every daddy bird wished they had (at least when compared to Blu), Roberto has the suave and moves to sing any lady bird off their feet, which is hardly surprising if he is voiced by Bruno Mars. Roberto was originally conceived to be a macho bird with a deep manly voice, but when Mars was brought into the picture, the director decided to reshape the character closer towards the image of Mars.
Eduardo
Also living in the jungle is Jewel's father, Eduardo, who thought that he had lost his daughter for good. Stern, fiercely protective and voiced by a menacing Andy Garcia who we know from "Ocean's Twelve", "The Untouchables", and "The Godfather Part III", this is one hard father-in-law Blu has to prove he is worthy of. Or else we don't want to imagine what this alpha bird will to do him.
Rafael
Always eager to take a break from his larger-than-life family, Blu's life mentor and Toco Toucan friend, Rafael, joins the macaws on their latest adventure. Voiced by Latino comedian George Lopez (of the 'George Lopez' comedy show), Rafael will once again be bestowing his guidance and life lessons to Blu on how to adapt to the wild and be a worthy son-in-law to the tough old beak, Eduardo.
Nigel
Never far from the tailfeathers of Blu and Jewel is the bitter cockatoo, Nigel, again voiced by Jemaine Clement. After losing his feathers pulled at the end of "Rio", Nigel is now plotting revenge against Blu and Jewel, even if it means hurting Jewel's extended family in the Amazon. He even finds a new partner-in-crime in "Rio 2" for his devious scheme.
Gabi
Gabi is a poison dart frog, voiced by Kristin Chenoweth, who is the new Nigel's new sidekick in "Rio 2". Gabi follows Nigel all the way into the jungle to help him get his revenge with macaws, not because she has a bone to pick with them, but because she absolutely adores Nigel, even though all she wants to do is cuddle with him, toxic skin notwithstanding.
Carla
Carla is the eldest of Blu and Jewel's three children. As a spunky teenager with the graceful talents of her mother and the less admired traits of her father, Carla's dream is to make it as a singer one day. Much to the annoyance of her parents, Carla is like every other ordinary teen who is always listening to her iPod and balked at the idea of a family trip to the Amazon until she finds out that her uncle Pedro and Nico are looking for fresh stars in the Amazon. Carla is voiced by former "The X-Factor" contender Rachel Crow, who is making her voice acting and feature debut in "Rio 2".
Bia
Bia is the middle child who is also the clever one among the three. Rarely without a book under her wings (even though she has the shortest one of them all), Bia is fascinated by the most trivial of facts but will learn to experience the larger wonders of life when she reaches the Amazon. Bia will be voiced by Amandla Stenberg, whom you may know as Rue from "The Hunger Games".
Tiago
Tiago is the youngest and the only boy out of Blu and Jewel's children. Energetic, brave and have a penchant for destruction like a boy with an ant farm and a magnifying glass, Tiago is the most willing participant of Jewel's plan to the wild because it gives him a new adventure for him to fly headlong to. Pierce Gagnon, most remembered as the being the terrifying child in "Looper", will be the voice of Tiago.
