When you think of a model, most likely you’d think of a tall statuesque and unattainable East European beauty, as seen on countless runways for countless fashion weeks.

The modeling world has quite often been critiqued for being too homogenous and accused of giving young women around the world unhealthy self-images due to its casting processes. As Edna Mode from The Incredibles said: “Supermodels. Heh! Nothing super about them… spoiled, stupid little stick figures with pouffy lips who think only about themselves.”

However, in recent years the modeling scene has been given a good shake up with unique faces and even deformities which have turned into a identifying and individual characteristic that sets these models apart from the rest. Gone are the years where only goddesses like Elle Macpherson and Iman walked the runways.

From models with vitiligo to even amputees with high fashion prosthetics, these ladies do not fade in the background defying the odds to become true supermodels.

Here are a few you should know about that have embraced their industry ‘flaws’ and flourished into unique and powerful individuals.
