'Ghostbusters 3' gains writer of 'The Heat'

Katie Dippold of the Melissa McCarthy and Sandra Bullock action comedy "The Heat" has joined "Ghostbusters 3" as co-writer.

Dippold will work with writer-producer Paul Feig to script the upcoming threequel, with Feig having directed both "Bridesmaids" and "The Heat."

August had seen Feig join the Sony Pictures project among talk that the new "Ghostbusters" would feature a female team of ghoul-hunting main characters.

"Yes, it will star hilarious women. That's who I'm gonna call," tweeted Feig, after confirming Dippold's involvement.

With Feig continuing to collaborate with "Bridesmaids" breakout Melissa McCarthy on both "The Heat" and "Spy" (May 2015), Bill Murray's speculation that she would make a good member of the "Ghostbusters 3" cast seems like an increasingly credible possibility.

Speaking to the Toronto Star in September, Murray had namedropped McCarthy along with "Bridesmaids" co-star Kristen Wiig, Linda Cardellini ("Mad Men," "Regular Show") and Emma Stone of "Zombieland" and "Crazy Stupid Love" as actresses he thought would work well in a female Ghostbusters team.
