Bollywood's 10 Most Unusual Screen Couples

Bollywood has produced some staple on-screen couples that we love to watch sizzle on screen, case in point Shahrukh-Kajol.

But the real challenge for a director is to break from the norm and go for some odd pairing to give much needed freshness to the film. Here’s a list of such odd-pairings, some which rocked and others that didn’t.

1. Abhishek Bachchan & Rani Mukherjee

Abhishek Bachchan is tall as a Giraffe, and it’s well-known that Rani Mukherjee isn’t one of the tallest actresses around. With a difference of almost a foot between the two, most filmmakers thought against pairing them. But once Mani Ratnam cast them in ‘Yuva’, they sizzled on screen with their crackling chemistry. The pair was an instant hit, as was the movie. The two went on to star in various other movies and was always appreciated. Sadly, we never got to see this pair star together again after the fallout from their alleged relationship.

2. R. Madhavan & Bipasha Basu

Madhavan certainly isn’t one of the fittest actors around. And when he was paired with an actress known for her toned body, sex appeal & fitness DVDs, it left people wondering. In ‘Jodi Breakers’ they played break-up specialists and their physical contrast on screen made people curious. Although the pairing was innovative, the movie failed to work as did their chemistry.

3. Rahul Bose & Mallika Sherawat

Rahul Bose is a legend when it comes to substantial content based cinema whereas Mallika is known for her raunchy item numbers and bold avatars. When they were cast together in ‘Pyaar Ke Side Effects’, people presumed that it will be another dud. But they were surprised and how!

4. Amitabh Bachchan & Jiah Khan

Amitabh is a legendary actor and is well-respected across the industry. But when RGV dared to cast him with Jiah Khan, 30 years his junior, furore was sure to rise. The movie handled the taboo subject of romance between a girl and a guy of her father’s age. Though the movie gained publicity, Amitabh became wary of trying the same stunt again.

5. Naseeruddin Shah & Vidya Balan

There isn’t as much age gap between Naseer & Vidya as between our previous pair, but it isn’t any less odd. Both are known to star in content based films and, despite the age gap, shared superb chemistry in both their films ‘Ishqiya’ & ‘The Dirty Picture’ (which were both super hits).

6. Shahid Kapoor & Rani/Vidya

Shahid started out as a typical college kid with chocolaty looks. Despite having grown in terms of talent, he hasn’t managed to mature much in his physical appearance. This is a major reason he looks like a mismatch with most of the leading ladies. When cast opposite actresses even slightly older, they end up looking like his aunts as seen in ‘Kismet Konnection’ & ‘Dil Bole Hadippa’.

7. Govinda & Katrina

What do you get when you pair a sophisticated London girl with the overweight king of masala movies in tacky clothes? You get ‘Partner’! This movie paired Govinda & Katrina as love interests and surprisingly it worked, but only because the story was about mismatched couple. Thankfully this pairing hasn’t been repeated for normal films as it would surely turn out to be a disaster.

8. Himesh Reshamiya & Hansika Motwani

This has got to be the oddest pairing ever! Himesh, the middle aged balding fellow, a singer turned terrible (wannabe) actor paired up with 15-year old Hansika was bound to turn into a disaster. The movie flopped, as did their chemistry and Hansika went on to try her luck in South Indian movies.

Sometimes unusual can be good whereas sometimes it just doesn’t work. But it is always healthy to experiment, who knows where we spot our next hit couple.
