New Star Trek Beyond Trailer Promises Drama In Space
After the initial trailer for Star Trek Beyond’ drew criticism for being too action-oriented, here’s a new look at the upcoming sci-fi sequel which puts a far greater emphasis on character and drama.

There’s a definite sense of the reboot saga going back to its beginnings here, opening on references to Captain Kirk’s father - played by Chris Hemsworth in the opening sequence of JJ Abrams’ 2009 ‘Star Trek.’
Viewers may also note that footage from the 2009 movie - showing a visibly younger Chris Pine watching the USS Enterprise being built on Earth - is used here, set against portentous lines from Karl Urban’s McCoy about Kirk finding his own identity.
Beyond this, we have more of the action shown in the earlier trailer, but with a greater sense of context, as the Enterprise crew are forced to abandon ship when they come under attack from the as-yet unnamed aliens led by Idris Elba’s Krall.
Though unrecognisable under the make-up, Elba’s gravelly tones (recently lent to Shere Khan in ‘The Jungle Book,’ and Chief Bogo in ‘Zootropolis’) immediately give him away.
Of the character, Elba recently told Entertainment Weekly, “Krall’s a character who’s deeply steeped in hatred — in my opinion, a well-earned hatred — for the Federation.
“It felt quite political. There’s a relatability to what’s happening in our world. Not everybody’s happy with what everybody calls the good guys.”
With the apparent destruction of the Enterprise (hardly the first time this has happened in a ‘Star Trek’ movie, as many vocal critics have grumbled), the crew are scattered on the face of a nearby alien planet - and here, it would seem, is where the bulk of the action will take place.
And this second trailer certainly makes it clear there will be action - but with a bit more introspection (and a lot less Beastie Boys) than the first trailer had to offer.
Along with this trailer, Paramount have also announced that ‘Star Trek Beyond’ will have its world premiere in an open-air IMAX screening at San Diego Comic Con.
