The 30-second teaser trailer was officially released online by Disney… and although it features just a brief glimpse of the upcoming sequel, it’s no surprise to hear the inimitable voice of Alan Rickman in his final role as Absolem the Caterpillar.

“You’ve been gone too long, Alice,” says Absolem as Alice is shown encountering various new surprises as she sets off to save Johnny Depp’s Mad Hatter. “There are matters that cannot be neglected. Hurry.”

Helena Bonham Carter returns as the iconic Red Queen, with Stephen Fry as the Cheshire Cat, Michael Sheen as the White Rabbit, Matt Lucas as Tweedledum and Tweedledee and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen.

And they’re also joined by British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen as the half-clock, half-human Time.

‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ picks up three years after Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’. Alice (played by Mia Wasikowska) has returned from her adventures in Asia and finds that the Mad Hatter is facing a heart-breaking end as the ticking hands of the Chronosphere – a device which powers all of time – begin to go against him.

“She faces that moment that a lot of young adults do in their 20s, which is that the way you spend your time is really important of what you’re going to accomplish in your life,” said producer Suzanne Todd in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “She has to face this decision of what she’s going to do with the rest of her life.”

Of course, Alice isn’t quite the same girl we met in ‘Alice in Wonderland’… and with time ticking away, it’s clearly an allegory for growing up. Even if the James Bobin-directed sequel is far more upbeat than the original.

“What I’m hoping our [first] movie did was root into this moment of female empowerment,” said Todd. “Hopefully now we’ve made that an even richer experience for people who love Alice.”

‘Alice Through The Looking Glass’ heads to cinemas on 27 May 2016.
