Netflix cancel 1899 despite fan hope for a season 2
Often, a foreign language series lands on Netflix and blows everything else out of the water. First came Dark, then dropped Squid Games; and then it was 1899 that everyone on our timelines couldn't stop talking about.
The show flipped between various different languages, with the official synopsis explaining, "When mysterious events change the course of an immigrant ship headed for New York in 1899, a mind-bending riddle unfolds for its bewildered passengers."
It jumped straight into the Top 10 Most-Watched on Netflix, with fans looking ahead to whether there'll be a second series.
Did 1899 season 2 get confirmed?
But sadly it's bad news for 1899 fans: the show's creators revealed on 2nd January 2022 that the show was not getting renewed for a second season. Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar shared a joint statement on Instagram which said:
'With a heavy heart we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don't turn out the way you planned. That’s life. We know this will disappoint millions of fans out there. But we want to thank you from the bottom of our hearts that you were a part of this wonderful adventure. We love you. Never forget."
Back in 2021, the pair spoke to Deadline about their hopes for more episodes, explaining that it "depends on the viewers" as to whether they get a multi-season deal.
Fans are understandably devastated about the cancellation, taking to social media to share their disappointment, with the cast of the show also sharing their upset. Lucas Lynggaard Tønnesen, who played Krester, wrote on Twitter, "As a lot of you may already know… 1899 will not be renewed for a 2nd and 3rd season… We are all truly devastated by this fact.
