Nathan Turner’s New California-Cool Fabric Line Gets Personal
Growing up, Nathan Turner fondly recalls running along the driveway of his family cattle ranch in the foothills of Sierra Nevada, which was lined with blackberry bushes. “I loved to pick the berries and bring them back for blackberry cobblers and jams,” he recalls. “I’d come back looking like I’d just left a crime scene—bright red hands and face.”
The adventure-filled ranch has heavily influenced his relaxed California aesthetic in interiors in the decades since (look no further than the ranch-style house he inhabits with his partner, Eric Hughes, in Ojai, featured in our April 2024 issue, for proof), so when a fabric collection was in the works, he wasn’t afraid to draw inspiration from his version of California tradition: ranch life.
This week the ELLE DECOR A-List designer unveiled in collaboration with Wallshoppe, the California Collection, a line of 33 prints that he describes as “traditional, with a lived-in look and feel.” The collection honors the classic design motifs that pay homage to the natural beauty of the Golden State—with a fresh take.
You’ll find prints that come in subtle, slightly sunbleached hues with patterns in soft blues, greens, and pink tones in the form of fabric and wallpaper. There are floaty flora prints inspired by classic Spanish architecture, geometric prints that give a nod to the horse blankets around the ranch, and a chintz pattern echoing the themes of Turner’s grandmother’s bedroom at the ranch, which he describes as “a relaxed version of the traditional English pattern with an abstract wing print in the background.”
There’s a deer print, the California version of a classic animal print; and prints featuring poppies, quails, acorns, and—of course—blackberries. But our favorite is the cowboy toile, a Western take on the classic French print. The cheeky scene swaps European pastoral scenes with lively horses and bandana-clad riders.
“It was really important to me that everything could play off each other” says Turner. “The plaids, stripes, and florals all play well together. It has an overall ease about it.” In fact, the patterns get along so well that he couldn’t resist translating them to collared pajamas—which will be available online in the coming weeks. Proof that Turner proudly wears his California roots on his sleeve in every way he can.
